I am assuming you don't have an "unlocked" US mobile phone which would allow you to simply buy a local Indian SIM card and use your own mobile phone. If not, then my first suggestion is that you simply buy an unlocked phone now in the US. You can buy them as far as I know (I don't live in the US); or perhaps a friend or colleague has one you can borrow. You can also rent one through Cellularabroad see http://www.cellularabroad.com/ or possibly your current service provider. This would save you the time and trouble of having to do this in India; although it probably is a bit more expensive than renting or buying in India.

Alternatively, if you want to wait until you get to India to get a phone, while I am sure you could rent a phone, my suggestion would be that you buy one. It can't cost much more than renting and you will get a new phone. Plus if you are not leaving from the same part of India in which you arrived, you won't have the hassle of trying to return the rental phone. Reputable service provides are Airtel and Reliance, there may be info on renting or buying at http://www.airtel.in/ or http://www.rcom.co.in/Rcom/personal/home/index.html , see esp the Prepaid Mobile section on Reliance which has a store locator as well.

Either Airetl or Reliance may have counters at your arrival airport; if not ask at your hotel for the nearest shop. If you are travelling to other states, it may be cost-effective to have different SIM cards for each state; however rates are rather low (compared to the US esp) so it may not be worth the time and trouble to get a new SIM card for each state.

In most cases when buying a SIM card or a phone in India you will need to show a passport and fill out some paperwork, so bring your passport with you.

Laurieann Gibson Plots 'Super Dope' Music Career With 'Last Chance'

One-time Lady Gaga collaborator talks to MTV News about how she went from behind the scenes to center stage.

Laurieann Gibson has worked with artists like one-time muse Lady Gaga and current inspiration Nicki Minaj, helping the pop princesses craft stage spectacles and killer dance routines. But, having spent the last chapter of her career shaping the careers of other artists, the one-time fly girl feels now is the time for her to move from behind the shadows and kick-start her own music career.

"When I began to choreograph and find my way pulling other artists' dreams out and changing music in a visual way, there was still a part of me that had something more to say," she told MTV News about working on her solo album. "There was still a desire to rock a stage and ultimately perform the eight count of my dream, but there was a lot of insecurity there."

It wasn't until last year, however, that she found the strength to hit the studio for this album. And she channeled all of those feelings into her music, including her lead single, the dancefloor anthem, "Last Chance." "I put that into the album, into the lyrical content and I'm really proud of what is coming out of the studio," she said.

Gibson said she started working on the album after wrapping up her E! show "Born to Dance" and directing Gaga's video for "Yoü and I." "It took a lot out of me creatively and after basically doing a lot visually and looking for another artist to spring board what was inside of me, the reality of 'How can I move something bigger than what I was doing?' It kept coming back to my own self."

Therefore she enlisted folks that she felt could help shape her vision. "[It was about] the own lyrical content, the desire to not necessarily work with a lot of my friends, the top producers and approach the album like that," she said. "So on my team I was working with DeMarco Webster, who has been working with me for a long time too, to independently A&R this vision that we had."

When they added songwriters Infared Ink to the mix, the album began to take shape. "I realized that, for me, great records always moved me with the lyrics and the melodies," she said. "And so I said, 'I think I can do it now,' 'cause I found a team of people who understand I didn't want a record that was 'drop it, pop it, shake it' just 'cause I can dance. We really made the album the old-school way. They watched me fight against the adversity and they learned to take my experience and my lingo and my language and we wrote an album that was really personal [to me]... it's really a super dope project."

Iran's Kiarostami goes to Japan for latest film

CANNES, France (AP) ? Abbas Kiarostami has found inspiration far from home.

The Iranian director's films are routinely banned in his home country, whose Islamist government has arrested or barred several younger filmmakers from working.

The 72-year-old auteur has responded by looking abroad for inspiration. His last feature, "Certified Copy," was shot in Italy, and his new Cannes Film Festival entry "Like Someone in Love" was made in Tokyo, in Japanese and with a Japanese cast.

"In the past few years for fairly obvious reasons, perhaps, I had to work outside Iran," Kiarostami told reporters in Cannes on Monday, saying this presented him with a challenge. "How could I convey to you what I had in my imagination without resorting to geography?"

Kiarostami built a global reputation with simple stories told with passion and conviction in Iran-set films like "Life and Nothing More" and "Through the Olive Trees. He said now setting a story in Japan had allowed him to "prove what I'm deeply convinced of ? that we all share the same human condition."

"That runs against something I thought in the past," the director said. "I thought Japan and the Japanese must be the country and the people that were the most removed from me."

"Like Someone in Love" ? the title comes from an Ella Fitzgerald song ? involves a listless young student who moonlights as a call girl, her mechanic boyfriend and an elderly professor who becomes involved in her life. It unfolds in the bustle and neon of Tokyo, but retains Kiarostami's usual languid pace and naturalistic performances.

"We didn't receive a script. That's the first time that's happened," said Tadashi Okuno, who plays the professor. Rin Takanashi is the student and Ryo Kase ? who appeared in Gus Van Sant's "Restless" and Clint Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima" ? plays her working-class boyfriend.

"He said we had to be ourselves, we had to be very natural. He didn't want a contrived character. That's why it was good for him to work with an actor like me ? because I don't know how to act that well," Okuno said.

Kiarostami fans will be happy to know the film also includes another of the director's staples ? scenes of characters talking and sometimes sleeping as they drive in cars.

Asked about his fondness for automotive settings, Kiarostami said a car is "a place like anywhere else. And I think it's even better than may other places. There are lots of advantages."

"People can't just escape from the conversation because they've got their seat belts on," he said. "If you don't have an answer you can't just stand up and walk away if you're in a car."

Kiarostami won Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, in 1997 for "Taste of Cherry." But his new film has had a mixed reception. Some critics were bemused by its abrupt ending ? The Guardian newspaper's Peter Bradshaw felt "the curtain comes down with an arbitrary crash just as the drama was becoming interesting."

Kiarostami said he felt the ending was appropriate but he was a bit surprised that he got away with it.

"I expected the producers to say, 'Your film doesn't have an ending.' Then gradually I realized my film doesn't have a beginning, either," he said. "Then I realized that's what happens in real life."
