Spain king's son-in-law appears in court
Inaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma and the Spanish king's son-in-law, arrives at the courthouse of Palma de Mallorca on the Mediterranean resort island of Mallorca, Spain, Saturday Feb. 25, 2012. Urdangarin, husband of Princess Cristina, the second daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, will be questioned over alleged corruption. The Duke is suspected of using his high-profile status to win contracts from regional governments for a nonprofit foundation he ran, then subcontract the work to companies he also oversaw, sometimes charging the public ridiculously inflated prices and stashing at least some of the income in overseas tax havens. PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain (AP) ? The Spanish king's son-in-law was jeered by hundreds of protesters, who pelted his car with eggs as he arrived at a court Saturday to answer questions about suspected fraudulent deals.
Inaki Urdangarin ? the Duke of Palma ? has not been charged with a crime. But he is being questioned at the courthouse on this Mediterranean island about whether he used his high-profile status to secure lucrative deals for a nonprofit foundation he ran, then fraudulently diverted some of the money for personal gain.
The investigation into the alleged financial misdeeds has embarrassed the monarchy in a country hard hit by a financial crisis and sky-high unemployment and ranks among the worst public relations mishaps the royal household has experienced in the 36-year reign of King Juan Carlos.
As news of the investigation began to fill Spanish newspapers last year, King Juan Carlos announced in December that his son-in-law would no longer take part in official ceremonies with the rest of the family.
Urdangarin, who lives in the U.S., is a former professional and Olympic handball player who acquired his title by marrying the king's daughter, Cristina, Duchess of Palma.
On Saturday, the duke arrived at the court accompanied by his lawyer, Mario Pascual Vives, then braved a short walk in front of hundreds of jeering protesters, some carrying banners reading, "Juan Carlos, if you knew, why did you keep quiet?"
A handful of pro-monarchy supporters were also present as around 150 police kept protesters behind barriers, but two eggs hit the duke's car as it arrived and a woman in the crowd was questioned by officers.
The somber looking Urdangarin stopped before some 350 journalists from around the world that had gathered outside the court to give a brief statement before going in to be questioned by judge Jose Castro.
"I appear to demonstrate my innocence, my honor and my professional activity," he said, adding he is convinced his statements to the court would "clear up the truth."
A second day of questioning is likely Sunday.
The duke is suspected of securing large contracts from regional governments for his foundation, then subcontracting the work to private companies he also oversaw, sometimes charging the public unrealistically inflated prices and syphoning some of the income to offshore tax havens.
Newspaper El Mundo reported the revenues Urdangarin and associates are suspected of having handled may exceed euro6 million ($8 million).
The duke's alleged misdeeds took place in 2004-2006. Urdangarin, the princess and their four children moved to Washington, D.C., in 2009 as the investigation began to heat up.
The case exploded in the media late last year as Spain was buffeted by Europe's debt crisis, its economic growth grinding to a halt and already huge jobless numbers swelling.
Under Spanish law, the court will decide whether the prosecution has adequate evidence to file charges against the duke.

The next 7 tips will let you avoid becoming one of these simple statistics.
First of all You?re a business. Realtors work with an agent, but they are independent, commissioned sales agents. What this means is that you?re a small business and should run your practice like a business. Again, remember you?re a small business owner.
Embrace a Planning Attitude. Without having an agenda, then you?re on some else?s plan ? usually effective realtor?s. Throughout the final 10 years, things i have discovered like a performance improvement consultant or coach is the fact that many people place more quality in traveling to the supermarket or perhaps a vacation than planning their lives either appropriately or personally.
Take A Look At Market Plan. Because you, as real estate agent, have the effect of your personal expenses, seek information specific for your marketing plan in your proper plan. Time put in creating your marketing plan?s certainly wisely spent. NOTE: Remember a business plan usually is data driven, while a proper plan identifies who what by when.
Establish Sales Goals. Making use of your proper plan of action, establish sales goals. If you?re a new comer to this industry, it might take 6 several weeks prior to the first purchase. HINT: Make use of the W.H.Y. S.M.A.R.T. criteria for setting goals.
Create a low cost. Budgeting is crucial because of the up and lower of the volatile marketplace. Your finances should arrange for your marketing costs, any extra costs for example education as well as your forecasted earnings.
Make Controlling Your Priority. Creating a business is difficult. You have to learn to manage yourself especially around personal time management, ongoing property business training training ongoing education models, and private existence balance. Property is stated to become a 24/7 business similar to any small business. However, it is necessary to not forget your individual existence including family, buddies, health, etc.
Look for a Mentor or perhaps a Property Coach. Going it alone is difficult. Take time to look for a mentor who will help you steer through a few of the known obstacles and assist you to throughout the ?peaks and valleys.? If you possess the assets, you may decide to employ a property coach or perhaps an executive coach who is an expert in small business help and purchasers.

Palin aides lash out at HBO's 'Game Change' (omg!)
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Current and former aides to Sarah Palin lashed out Wednesday at HBO's "Game Change," describing the upcoming film's depictions of her on the 2008 campaign trail as "sick" and inaccurate.
None of the aides said they have yet seen the movie, which debuts March 10, and some said they had asked for an opportunity to screen the film but had been denied.
Trailers for the film, which is based on the bestselling book chronicling the 2008 presidential race, have been released, however, and some snippets appear to cast Palin in an unfavorable light. As portrayed by Julianne Moore, Palin is seen complaining about how she's being handled by political advisers and mumbling about missing her baby, who was born in April 2008. In one snippet, campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, portrayed by Woody Harrelson, describes her as being on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Aides said none of that jibes with their own experiences with the former Alaska governor, and they defended her vigorously Wednesday.
Jason Recher, who handled vice presidential road operations for the McCain-Palin campaign, called Palin "one of the most engaged public servants I'd ever observed." Tom Van Flein, her former personal attorney, called her diligent, sharp and enthusiastic about the campaign.
Meg Stapleton, a former spokeswoman, said that she, unlike some of the others who worked with Palin during the campaign, had not been contacted by anyone associated with either the book or movie.
"They don't want to hear anything good," she said, her voice full of passion. "We all know Palin sells and the dramatization of Palin sells even more. This is sick."
"They mock Gov. Palin, you mock Gov. Palin, as weak and unable to cope and press forward," she told reporters on the conference call. "And the movie and the trailer ... say that. And yet look with your own eyes at what she and her family have endured and inspired over the last few years. Any lesser man would have hanged himself by now. So who's weak?"
Recher noted that Palin wasn't the primary focus of the book, and he said he told screenwriter and co-executive producer Danny Strong that the book "absolutely, unequivocally" did not accurately reflect his time with the McCain campaign.
Filmmakers have said that they sought historical accuracy.
Director Jay Roach last month said he wrote a long letter to Palin seeking an interview with her to help the film, "but I got a very quick email back from her attorney saying, 'I checked, she declined.'"
Strong, in an email, acknowledged that members of Palin's camp asked to screen the film but said filmmakers responded that they would privately screen the movie for Palin and her husband. He said Sarah Palin declined the offer.
The film portrays Palin "in a balanced light," he said, "showing her strengths and weaknesses as the vice presidential candidate."
In addition to the book, Strong said the movie is also based on 25 interviews conducted with members of the campaign by himself and Roach. He said secondary sources include Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue," other books written on the campaign and "innumerable" newspaper and magazine articles.
Palin did not participate in Wednesday's call. Tim Crawford, the treasurer of the political action committee SarahPAC, who facilitated the call, said Palin is on the record as considering the movie a false narrative, and wrote about her experiences in one of her books.

Man United's cash reserves fall
By ROB HARRIS
updated 12:40 p.m. ET Feb. 21, 2012
LONDON - Manchester United's cash reserves fell by 100 million pounds ($158 million) in six months partially to finance an investment in a roster failing to maintain the English champions' dominance.
As a result of spending that also took in stadium improvements and a bond repurchase program, the Old Trafford bank balance dropped from 150.6 million pounds to 50.9 million pounds ($238 million to $80 million) to Dec. 31, the club's quarterly accounts revealed on Tuesday.
Despite net spending of 48 million pounds ($76 million) on new players, including goalkeeper David de Gea, defender Phil Jones and winger Ashley Young, United failed to advance past the first round of the Champions League and has been eliminated from both domestic cups. Meanwhile, neighbor Manchester City holds two-point lead in the Premier League.
United spent 5.3 million pounds ($8.4 million) in the three months ending Dec. 31 buying back bonds that were issued two years ago to raise 504 million pounds (then $762 million) to replace long-term financing and reduce debts to hedge funds.
United has spent 92.8 million pounds ($147 million) repurchasing that debt ? more than the 80 million pounds (then $130 million) received from Real Madrid in 2009 for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The club's debt, resulting from the 2005 takeover by the American Glazer family, stood at 439 million pounds ($694 million) at the end of 2011 and incurred almost 24.5 million pounds ($39 million) in interest payments in six months.
Although the debt was down from the 508 million pounds at the end of 2010 it rose again in the final three months of 2011 by 6 million pounds ($9.5 million).
However, United's moneymaking abilities appear to be undiminished, with 175 million pounds ($277 million) in revenue in the six months ending Dec. 31 ? up more than 10 percent on the same period a year earlier due largely to a rise in TV income and a new training jersey sponsorship deal with express delivery and freight firm DHL.
"Revenues continue to grow strongly although costs are increasing just as quickly so pretty much negating that growth," the Manchester United Supporters' Trust said in a statement. "However the key figures of interest to supporters show the Glazers have now spent every penny of the money received from the sale of Ronaldo, and more.
"That's now 92.8 million pounds spent on buying back their own bond debt that they loaded onto our club."
MUST said that since Ronaldo's departure, net transfers totaled 90 million pounds ($142 million) while 225 million pounds ($356 million) had been taken out of the club to cover debt payments and interest.
"What could the club have done with that extra 225 million pounds? Cheaper tickets for loyal fans, investing massively in the squad and stadium, developing and retaining the best youth players, competing on an equal basis with the very best teams in Europe," MUST said. "This is the true cost to Manchester United of the Glazers' ownership."

In Darkness: movie review (+trailer)
The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on the heroism of a Polish sewer inspector during the country's 1942 German occupation.
Agnieszka Holland's powerful "In Darkness" is set in 1942 in ?the eastern Polish city of Lvov at a time when it was occupied by the Germans and their Ukrainian allies. The city's Christian inhabitants, battered and war-weary, are still far better off than the Jews, whom the Nazis randomly shoot in the streets and ghettoize en route to their eventual deportation to concentration camps.

Recent movie reviews
Leopold Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz) is a Polish sewer inspector who also doubles as a scavenger. To provide for his wife and daughter, and also, we sense, because he likes the thrill of the hunt, he and his accomplice (Krzysztof Skonieczny) loot the abandoned buildings of Jews. Because of Socha's knowledge of the sewers, the local Ukrainian Nazi officer offers him an added financial incentive to root out the Jews hiding underground.
Unlike most Holocaust-themed movies, even some of the strongest (like "Schindler's List"), "In Darkness," which is based on true events and is Oscar-nominated for best foreign film, doesn't draw clear lines of demarcation between the righteous and the venal. Socha initially keeps several Jewish families hidden away, not because he is noble but because the Jews make him a better offer ? a richer bribe. And the Jews crammed into the blackness and the stench are not sentimentalized. One man, for example, has abandoned his wife and daughter for his mistress, whom he likewise abandons when she becomes pregnant. With the exception of the group's leader, Mundek Margulies (Benno F?rmann), who is portrayed in classic stalwart-hero mold, none of the Jews are given the star treatment.
This is as it should be. Holland and her screenwriter David Shamoon (whose parents fled Baghdad to escape Iraq's persecution of Jews) understand that suffering isn't necessarily ennobling and that sometimes goodness emanates from the unlikeliest sources ? in this case, Socha. The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on his heroism. This man who dislikes Jews and initially thinks only of his own profit, gradually, fitfully, is transformed by the end into someone who risks even the lives of his own family, whom he loves, in order to save the people he calls "my Jews."
Holland has made excellent movies in this vein before, especially the 1991 "Europa Europa," but "In Darkness" is her most unremitting achievement. The reason we feel so close to Socha, a man who at first seems nothing more than a racist scoundrel, is that his moral odyssey, with its advances and retreats, is so emotionally believable. Holland could not have chosen a better actor to play Socha, whose burliness and blank eyes are, as it turns out, camouflage for the valiant human within. (Wieck?ie?wicz has been amply honored in Poland for his stage and film work, almost all of which is maddeningly unavailable in the United States.)
There are sequences in this film that are almost impossible to take, such as the one in which the cries of a mother's newborn risks exposing the entire group, but for the most part Holland avoids depicting the full horror of the Jews' entrapment. (The assumption is that we already know the horrors.) When the story is periodically brought above ground, into the daylight, the effect is both exhilarating and unsettling. The bright, wide world looks like freedom after all that blackness, but this is an illusion: Death is here, too.
In the film's climax, the rain pouring down from the sky threatens to turn the sewers into a death trap. This is when Socha demonstrates his true mettle. He is possessed beyond reason by his need to save the Jews. Like few other movies, "In Darkness" gets at the mania of those who would risk everything to save others. Socha is bewildered by the man he has become, and exultant, too. He astonishes himself ? and us. Grade: A (Rated R for violence, disturbing images, sexuality, nudity, and language.)

Curcumin molecular targets in obesity and obesity-related cancers.
Source
School of life Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, Kyungpook National University, 1370 Sangeok-dong, Buk-ku, Daegu 702-701, Korea.
Abstract
Obesity is characterized as an increased BMI, which is associated with the increased risk of several common cancers, including colorectal, breast, endometrial, renal, esophageal, gallbladder, melanoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma and prostate cancer. The increased risk of obesity-related cancers could be mediated by insulin resistance, adipokines, obesity-related inflammatory cytokines, sex hormones, transcription factors and oxidative stress, which disrupt the balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis. The yellowish compound, curcumin (diferuloylmethane), is known to possess multifaceted pharmacological effects. The molecular mechanisms linking obesity to cancer risk, and how curcumin mediates anticancer and obesity activities, have not yet been publicized. Curcumin modulates multiple molecular targets and reverses insulin resistance as well as other symptoms that are associated with obesity-related cancers. In this study, we show that ample evidence exists to support recommendations that curcumin mediates multiple molecular pathways, and is considered to be of therapeutic value in the treatment and prevention of obesity-related cancers.

The news emerged as authorities announced they were searching for two more suspects in the botched bomb plot, including a possible explosives specialist who may have been training the Iranians.
The foiled plan was discovered Tuesday when explosives in the men's rented house blew up by mistake, forcing them to flee.
Two were detained in the Thai capital, and a third was captured Wednesday in neighboring Malaysia as he reportedly tried to return to Iran.
After flying into the southern city of Phuket on Feb. 8, the men moved to Pattaya and stayed there for at least two nights before heading to Bangkok.
Located 45 miles southeast of the Thai capital, Pattaya is particularly notorious for its sleazy sex industry and large contingent of prostitutes.
Hookah pipes and beer
The Iranians hung out with several female sex workers during their stay there, and one of the women was brought to Bangkok to identify the suspects on Thursday, Lt. Col. Noppon Kuldiloke, a senior immigration police investigator in southern Thailand, said.
A cell phone image taken by one of the women, published by the Bangkok Post with an article headlined "Suspects partied in Pattaya," purportedly showed the three Iranians at a Middle Eastern bar or restaurant surrounded by hookah water-pipes, two of them cradling women in their arms.
The men posed for the photo around a low, drink-filled table on which there appeared to be at least one bottle of beer.
The woman who took the image said one of the now-detained suspects, Mohammad Kharzei, had asked her to escort him "because he was not good at speaking English," according to the Bangkok Post.
Thailand: Iranian planned terror attack on Israeli diplomats
She said she brought two companions for Kharzei's friends, and they had drinks and played snooker together.
The woman, named by the Post only as Nan, detected nothing awry, except when one of the Iranians "barred her from approaching a closet" in his hotel room, the newspaper reported.
"What we got from Ms. Nan is circumstantial evidence that helps confirm to us that they were here together in Pattaya," Thawatchai Nongbua, inspector of Chon Buri Immigration Office, told the Post.
Signs of stress
National police chief Priewpan Damapong told the paper that Khazaei had been showing signs of stress and had refused to eat in custody at the immigration bureau.
So they took Nan to see him and afterward Khazaei appeared more relaxed and agreed to have some food, the officer said.
US official: Iran 'unlikely' to provoke conflict
The botched plot has ratcheted up tensions between Iran and Israel, which is accusing Iran of waging a covert campaign of state terror that included a bombing Monday in New Delhi that tore through an Israeli diplomatic vehicle, wounding an Israeli diplomat's wife and driver, and a failed bomb attempt the same day in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
Video: Thai blast could escalate Mideast tensions (on this page)Iran has denied responsibility for all three bomb plots, and blames the Jewish state for the recent killings of Iranian atomic scientists.
Thailand's national police chief said Thursday that the detained Iranians were plotting to attack Israeli diplomats, citing the similarity of so-called "sticky" bombs that can be attached magnetically that were used in New Delhi and Tbilisi.
Footage
On Friday, Bangkok police commissioner Lt. Gen. Winai Thongsong announced authorities were searching for two more suspects in the case, including one man who was seen early Tuesday on closed circuit camera footage as he left the same house where the accidental explosion later took place.
Police said the man was seen leaving the residence with a bag in his hand, and had been coming and going repeatedly in the days prior to that.
Strait of Hormuz: Iranians, smugglers and fireworks
The same cameras captured each of the three Iranian men leaving the residence shortly after an explosion ripped the roof of the house that afternoon.
Winai said the newest suspect was 52 years old and of Middle Eastern descent, but gave no other details and did not give his nationality.
He said police also are looking for an additional suspect who had rented the destroyed home with an Iranian woman named Leila Rohani who is now believed to be back in Tehran.
Besides Kharzei, the two other detained suspects are Saeid Moradi, whose leg was sheared off by explosives he was carrying on a busy Bangkok street as he tried to flee, and Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, who was arrested in Malaysia and was trying to return to Iran.

Kindness Ranch: Cute Critters and Quiet Retreat ? What's 4 Dinner ...
Was glad to help promote a great animal sanctuary on my work blog. ?Thought I?d go ahead and share it here, too.
Cross-posted at Aqua Care Solar
We know many of our clients personally and often attend their events and contribute to their charities. ??So it just seems a natural extension to promote them on our blog. ?We are happy to use this platform to help you reach out. ? I was thrilled to learn about?Kindness Ranch?this morning from one of our Solar clients. ?Here?s some information on this great organization. ?If you?re looking for a sweet companion,?check out their animals up for adoption.
Kindness Ranch is the only sanctuary?in the US that takes in all kinds of research animals. While new, it is the result of a decade of work, saving, and planning.
Laboratory animals have long held a special place in the heart of Dr. David Groobman, Founder of Kindness Ranch. Successful in business, Dr. Groobman first saved enough to provide for his family into the future. Once this was accomplished, he dedicated all the profits of his business for ten years to the ranch. He searched four years to locate the perfect 1,000 acre parcel near historic Hartville in Wyoming.
Groobman?s passion attracted caring board members to the cause. Together, they began planning for a sanctuary with the expectation that the residents will always receive the best in animal care and that dogs and cats would be rehabilitated in a home-like environment. Ground was broke in 2006. After building four guests yurts, a dog yurt, a cat yurt, and a managers? yurt, construction was finished in the summer of 2007.
The benefits to the animals are obvious: they are well-cared for in every aspect of their lives.
Besides rescuing everything from dogs to pigs, you can also take advantage of the serenity of their Wyoming location and take a time out there:
The Hartville area of Southeastern Wyoming?is steeped in history. Here you can find peace and serenity, wildlife and outdoor activities, and, of course, the Kindness Ranch. As a Kindness Ranch member, you can stay in one of our beautiful yurts. Use it as a base while you visit local sites or stay here and help us care for the animals.
Head over to their page and learn more about the good works they do. ?And if you would like us to promote your event or charity, hit the comments or send us an email: ?office@aquacaresolar.com

Business to Business Advertising ? Putting together a business ...
The concept of business to business advertising
Before you proceed with your business to business advertising, think of the concept that you are going to adopt. Your target business customer needs to have a compelling reason to buy your product. Remember its all about your business customer and not about you. You might think your product is great but ask yourself the question why would your target business customer buy it?
Remember your business client got out of bed with corporate problems, goals and other things on his mind. Your business to business advertising is therefore vying for attention amongst many other things and therefore needs to present a compelling reason that?s important to your business client to buy your product.
Don?t bore your business client
Your business client is already looking at dull reports, bank statements and all sorts of other boring pieces of documentation so don?t add your bit to it. Instead present your business customer with a glitzy, racy business to business advertising presentation that will make them say ?wow?. They will welcome the break in their routine. In all this, don?t forget to present a compelling reason for them to buy your product. In fact, that is the next point I shall dwell upon.
After you have their attention, present them the reason to buy
Now that your business to business advertising solutions has succeeded in
grabbing their attention, complete the process by presenting them with a convincing and compelling reason to buy your product. Present the biggest benefit
first otherwise they will quickly lose interest. Presenting the best compelling reason to buy the item makes them think about it. Once you present the most compelling reason first, you can then move on to other reasons for buying your product. Remember always to think from your customer?s point of view.
Proof is in the pudding
When you are running your online brand marketing, do not forget to prove your statements. Be armed with facts and figures or be armed with a demonstration. Do not under any circumstances ask your corporate customer to ?trust you? or to believe you ? it?s a guaranteed switch off and your business to business advertising will fail. Always be prepared to present overwhelming proof to back up your
claims.
Be specific
You?ll be amazed at how many Business social media marketing campaigns end with a
phone number or a email or a URL. Sure you expect them to call, write to visit your website and then what? Instead end your business to business advertising with an offer. ?Call now on xxx-xxx-xxxx for a free sample delivered within 24 hours? or ?visit our website to avail of a special inaugural discount on your first order? and so on. Offering your business client something specific gives them the reason to call you or email you or visit your website. Remember, unless you present them an inducement to action, nothing will happen. Always therefore end your business to business advertising with concrete offer and a call to action.

Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Adapted Screenplay
'The Descendants' and 'Moneyball' seem to be leading the race, but who will take home gold?
By Kevin P. Sullivan
Brad Pitt in "Moneyball"
Photo: Columbia TriStar
Woody Allen has dominated the race to decide the year's best screenplay, winning the Golden Globe for "Midnight in Paris," but when the Academy Awards split up the category into Adapted and Original, the former proves much harder to predict.
Based on critic and guild awards, the competition for Best Adapted Screenplay comes down to two films: "Moneyball" and "The Descendants." Each has won significant prizes in the past few months, so the category could result in one of the night's few genuine surprises.
Here are our predictions for Best Adapted Screenplay:
Who Will Win: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for "The Descendants." Unfortunately, this will be the film's consolation prize in a night dominated by Jean Dujardin and "The Artist." Without all of the hype surrounding Michel Hazanavicius' silent film, the story of a soon-to-be widower in Hawaii would be the odds-on favorite to take Best Picture and Actor. True to his reputation, Payne and his co-writers crafted a subtle, sad and touching film that keeps you laughing the entire way through. He has proven himself to be one of our most consistent auteurs. And although Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian's screenplay for "Moneyball" deserves its spot as a front-runner, Sorkin's win for "The Social Network" only happened a year ago.
Who Should Win: Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." Straughan and his late wife O'Connor faced the challenge of not only adapting a beloved novel, but one that had been previously adapted into a beloved miniseries. In transforming John le Carré's book for the screen, the writing team crafted a story that confused audiences but never entirely lost them. The film broke box-office records with its limited release and proved successful despite its complexity. The screenplay for "Tinker Tailor" stands out not only because of the tragic story of the married couple who wrote it — O'Connor died of cancer shortly after finishing the script — but the level of success that came out of such a difficult assignment.
Who should win Best Adapted Screenplay? Sound off below!

Dow within 100 of 13,000 as stocks barrel higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? Investors sent U.S. stocks barreling to their highest levels of the year Thursday, buoyed by slivers of encouraging news about jobs and housing. At least for a day, they overlooked the lack of clarity about Greece's marathon negotiation for a bailout.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 123.13 points to close at 12,904.08, its third triple-digit gain this year. It was the highest close for the Dow since May 19, 2008, four months before the worst of the financial crisis.
As the Dow moved to within sight of 13,000, applause broke out at the closing bell on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 14.81 points to 1,358.04, its highest close in nine and a half months. The Nasdaq composite, which has had an even stronger year than the Dow and S&P and is trading at its highest since 2000, rose 44.02 points to 2,959.85.
The rally was broad, with all but one of the 30 stocks in the Dow, Kraft Foods, closing higher. All 10 industry groups in the S&P were comfortably higher, led by materials stocks, including strong showings from DuPont and Dow Chemical.
General Motors was among the best-performing stocks of the day. Two years after it was almost wiped out, the company turned a record $7.6 billion profit last year, bigger even than when Americans couldn't stop buying trucks and SUVs.
Microsoft rose 4 percent, as did Bank of America, which tends to swing wildly with the market.
The Labor Department said weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped for the fourth time in five weeks to the lowest point since March 2008. That was when the jobless rate was just 5.1 percent, far below the current rate of 8.3 percent.
Construction of single-family homes cooled slightly in January, but a rise in permits suggested builders were growing more confident that more buyers are ready to come off the sidelines.
There are doubts about how long the momentum can be sustained, and even questions about what's sustaining it.
The market has seemed determined to move higher this year, despite mostly incremental and vague news about the Greek debt crisis and sometimes-conflicting reports on the U.S. economy.
"I think we're floating on air. There's not much going on," said Ben Schwartz, chief market strategist at Lightspeed Financial.
He warned that there could be volatility ahead for the market. The Dow has yet to suffer a 100-point loss this year, a sharp contrast to the triple-digit swings that were common last summer.
John Burke, president of Burke Financial Strategies in New Jersey, said he thinks the Federal Reserve has been artificially propping up the market with cheap money generated by low interest rates.
Burke warned that the low rates could allow the U.S. to put off reducing its budget deficit.
"They're pushing the problem off," Burke said. "We're fine today, we'll avoid recession, but what's that going to do to us when the term is up?"
Gas prices could be a threat for the U.S. economy, particularly as Iran threatens to cut exports. The average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.52, the highest on record this time of year, and could climb to $4.25 a gallon by late April.
But others thought the positive jobs and housing reports will continue to be what sways the market.
"The more important story is what clearly is a continuing U.S. recovery," said Tim Speiss, chairman of personal wealth advisers at EisnerAmper. "I could go find some negative news report, but it would go against what investors are doing."
The hopeful signs about the economy increased investors' appetite for higher-risk investments like stocks, and they moved money out of bonds to make room in their portfolios.
The yield on the government's benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves in the opposite direction from its price, was at 1.92 percent before the report on jobless claims. It jumped to 1.96 percent in minutes.
A separate report found that wholesale prices, excluding the volatile food and energy categories, increased 0.4 percent in January, the most in six months. Inflation generally hurts Treasurys by reducing the buying power of the fixed returns they pay.
Also just before the jobs news came out, the euro was sitting at a three-week low against the dollar. But it rallied almost a full penny, to $1.3143 from $1.3063 late Wednesday.
The euro is perceived to be a riskier investment than the dollar, and traders tend to buy riskier currencies and sell safer ones when they perceive the economic situation to be getting better.
As it has for many days, the Greek crisis plodded along without any certainty. The difference this time was that investors didn't seem to care. European finance ministers will discuss the Greek bailout at a meeting Monday.
Greece is negotiating for breaks on loans due next month in addition to the bailout, which would be aimed at preventing a bankruptcy that could send a shock through the world financial system.
But some investors are growing complacent: They either have faith that the European Union will find a way to keep Greece from defaulting, or they think Greece will default but it won't matter to the rest of Europe.
Among other stocks making big moves:
? J.M. Smucker plummeted 8 percent after the company missed analysts' estimates for net income and revenue. The company said its sales volume fell 10 percent because it raised prices for Jif peanut butter, Folgers coffee and Crisco.
? Molson Coors rose 3 percent after the beer maker beat analysts' expectations, helped by higher sales of Modelo beer in Japan and Coors Light in Latin America and China.
? Tech stocks rose 1.57 percent, behind only materials companies as the biggest gainers for the day. Some analysts think that tech will prove a wise investment because companies, sitting on cash that they are nervous about investing otherwise, will plow it into new technology. Groupon rose 4 percent.

5th person convicted in NJ schoolyard killings (AP)
NEWARK, N.J. ? A fifth person charged in the execution-style killings of three friends in a New Jersey schoolyard has been convicted.
An Essex County jury on Tuesday found Jose Carranza guilty of felony murder and robbery charges. It acquitted him of charges he sexually assaulted a woman who survived the August 2007 attack in a playground behind Newark's Mount Vernon School.
Carranza is an illegal immigrant from Peru. He was free on bail in an unrelated case when the killings occurred. He declined to testify in his own defense.
The three friends who were killed died from gunshot wounds to their heads. All the victims were either attending or planning to attend Delaware State University that fall.
Two co-defendants have been convicted. Two others pleaded guilty. A sixth defendant is awaiting trial.

Houston mayor has plan for a new crime lab
After two years of fruitless talks with the county regarding how to merge crime lab operations, Mayor Annise Parker plans to unveil today the first step of a go-it-alone strategy that ultimately would result in a city crime lab that is out from under police control.
Parker will propose an independent board to oversee the crime lab, mayoral spokeswoman Janice Evans said.
The Parker plan aims to establish a shop where neither police nor prosecutors dictate the speed, priority or thoroughness of the testing and analysis of evidence.
Doing so without the county's buy-in means the two governments are staking out plans to continue operating separate and, in some cases, duplicative operations.
Last month, Commissioners Court approved a plan to start construction on a forensics tower at the end of 2013, funded by $80 million in bonds approved by county voters in 2007. County officials are wary of sharing control of the new lab without also sharing its costs.
Criminal justice advocates praised Parker's push for independence.
"We definitely see it as a much-needed step to ensuring that people are not wrongfully convicted," said Ana Y??ez-Correa, executive director of the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition, which advocates for human and civil rights and protecting public safety. "Independence is key."
'Competing models'
The city and county have disagreed on what independence means. County officials insist that although Commissioners Court has the power to appoint the director of its Institute for Forensic Sciences and to set its budget, the operation runs independently of the sheriff and the district attorney. Parker has said that to hand over the city's crime lab work to the county "simply substitutes one government master for another government master."
"In one sense, we will have two competing models. In that way we'll be able to see which one works out better," said Pat McCann, former president of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association. "In the other sense, it's a shame that real tax savings can't be had across all Harris County, which includes the city, and get a better bang for the taxpayer dollar."
The city's crime lab has struggled with problem after problem since an independent audit a decade ago revealed shoddy forensic work including unqualified personnel, lax protocols and facilities that included a roof that leaked rainwater onto evidence. The Houston Police Department currently has a backlog of untested rape kits that last summer was estimated at approximately 7,000.
The mayor's plan does not preclude merging operations with the county, Evans said.
"In fact, we hope we can reach agreement on something that would include more entities than the city," she said. The local government corporation board Parker envisions would have the power to broker deals with other jurisdictions.
Merger not ruled out
County Judge Ed Emmett said that although the city and county are on separate tracks right now, Parker's proposal ultimately could make it easier for the two governments to come together.
"By having the LGC, it opens up more options for how the city can approach forensic science, including partnering with the Institute of Forensic Sciences," Emmett said.
The city currently uses local government corporations to run its convention business and the Parks Board. The mayor appoints board members, but cannot overturn board decisions.
The details of the plan shared publicly in advance of the City Council briefing addressed only governance of the lab. The plan does not appear to address operations, but, presumably, would leave those decisions to the new board. Evans said the board could be in place by late spring and that independent crime lab operations could start before the end of Parker's second term in 2013.
