For 1 day in L.A., Lincoln salutes its glorious past - Automotive News

BRADFORD WERNLE

November 29, 2012 - 11:31 am ET

LOS ANGELES -- While other automakers were showing off their latest 21st century creations on the first day of the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, the Lincoln stand stood apart, filled with restored classics from the brand's glory days. Those grand days were many years ago.

Cynics might say Lincoln hasn't had much to brag about since the stunning blue 1956 Continental Mark II that rotated on a turntable at the center of the display here. Or the gorgeous 1961 Continental with the suicide doors.

As Lincoln has gone about reinventing itself for a new generation of buyers, the stewards of the brand have talked little about the past, or at least the recent past, when Lincoln was known primarily for floaty, boaty Town Cars and one of the most geriatric owner bases in the industry.

Lincoln presented seven cars from its past on the first press day of the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, including the landmark 1956 Continental Mark II.

By displaying the vintage cars on the eve of the arrival of a much-anticipated new car designed to make Lincoln relevant again -- the 2013 Lincoln MKZ sedan -- Lincoln hopes to rekindle a long dormant flame.

"We're not going to dwell on the heritage of the Lincoln brand but people are interested in substantive stories, and we have that in our history," said Matt VanDyke, Lincoln's global sales and marketing chief, speaking at the display. "So we're going to draw from what we were when we were at our best and use that as our inspiration going forward."

Lincoln again wants to be known for "building world class premium automobiles that were bespoke, individual, special," he said. "They stood apart but didn't necessarily stand out. They weren't meant to be No. 1 selling. They were world class. We aim to retake that mantle."

The Lincoln Derham Sport Sedan, left, had a feature virtually unheard of in its day -- a huge, retractable sunroof.

Case in point was the 1937 Lincoln Derham Sport Sedan, a one-of-a-kind car built on speculation by the Derham Coach Co. This black beauty, a long and stately reminder of the days when automobiles evoked elegance and grandeur, never went into production. Edmund Burchman, the owner, found it in a barn in Albert Lea, Minn., in 1977 and spent four years restoring it. The car won best in class at the Pebble Beach Concours in 2004.

The Lincoln Derham Sport Sedan had a feature virtually unheard of in its day -- a huge, retractable sunroof. It's that sunroof that connects the 1937 Lincoln Derham Coupe to the 2013 Lincoln MKZ sedan, which will also have a one-of-a-kind retractable sunroof, a massive sheet of curved glass that retracts over the rear window.

Visitors to the Los Angeles Auto Show today will find the beautiful vintage Lincolns have been removed from the stand and replaced by 2013 MKZs.

VanDyke and his team fervently hope that with this new car, Lincoln has finally ended its long and fruitless quest for a proper heir to the brand's grand heritage.

Ex-treasurer to Dem politicians faces sentencing

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A former campaign treasurer who defrauded dozens of California Democratic politicians of at least $7 million was incapable of managing her business, often letting candidates' bills go unpaid and refusing to fire incompetent employees, her attorney says in a court filing submitted before her sentencing Wednesday.

A judge was expected to sentence Kinde Durkee, who pleaded guilty to defrauding clients that included U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein over more than a decade. Federal prosecutors and her attorney have requested an eight-year sentence.

In documents filed late Tuesday, Durkee's attorney portrayed her as so overwhelmed by her fear of conflict that she simply could not manage her clients' money or the day-to-day affairs of her campaign finance operation. As a result, she raided the bank accounts that were set up to hold political contributions to candidates, officeholders and various groups, and used the money to pay for a variety of personal and business expenses.

The account deficits grew over the years until sloppy campaign finance reports filed by her firm prompted a state investigation.

Durkee's fear of confrontation led to all manner of poor decisions, according to the filing by her attorney. She refused to ask clients to pay their bills, paid fines imposed by state regulators out of her own pocket and worked long hours at menial business tasks despite having a staff that was too large for her operation.

Prosecutors and her attorney, Daniel Nixon, say Durkee, 59, ran the equivalent of a shell game from her Burbank office.

She shifted millions of dollars among bank accounts for politicians, community groups, personal accounts and those of her business, Durkee & Associates. She used the money to pay mortgages for her home and business, care for her parents in a home for seniors and for incidental expenses such as trips to Costco.

"Although the number of clients grew, so did the number of non-paying clients, and Ms. Durkee found that she had trouble confronting her clients to collect payment," according to her attorney's filing. "She had a very difficult time laying off incompetent employees and continued to employ individuals who were not able to adequately perform their jobs."

Durkee pleaded guilty in March to five counts of mail fraud for defrauding clients. Among them were Feinstein, who lost about $4.5 million. The roster also included Reps. Loretta Sanchez and Susan Davis; state Sen. Lou Correa, D-Anaheim; Assemblyman Jose Solorio, D-Santa Ana; and political nonprofit groups such as the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.

In March, U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner called Durkee "the Bernie Madoff of campaign treasurers," referring to the infamous New York financial manager who pleaded guilty to operating the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Wagner said he believes the actual fraud is closer to $10 million.

Over a 12-year period, Durkee used the millions of misappropriated dollars for her personal and business expenses, hiding the theft by preparing false campaign disclosure reports, prosecutors said in their pre-sentencing report.

The pre-sentencing report prepared by Durkee's attorney says she has always been known as a kind and generous woman, and that she did not lead a lavish lifestyle. Durkee's husband of nearly 30 years, John Forgy, has been unemployed for more than 15 years, "which increased the financial pressure on Ms. Durkee to support them," the report said.

Large sections of the filing released by the U.S. attorney's office were redacted. Durkee's attorney had previously submitted a request to have some documents sealed from public view.

The scheme was uncovered by investigators with the California Fair Political Practices Commission, who noticed discrepancies in the filings for Solorio and asked the FBI for assistance. The state lawmaker lost at least $677,000 to Durkee, according to the criminal complaint.

The judge was expected to also set a restitution figure, although the prospects for most victims recovering their money are slim. Durkee and her husband have agreed to forfeit the Burbank office from which she operated and to hand over her 401(k) retirement account, estimated to be valued between $100,000 and $120,000.

The crimes could have carried a maximum penalty of 100 years, but Durkee's plea deal calls for a possible sentence of 11 to 14 years. The U.S. Attorney's office said in a filing this week that it will seek eight years at her sentencing in U.S. District Court in Sacramento.

If Judge Kimberly Mueller agrees, Durkee would have to serve six years and 10 months before she is eligible for parole. Durkee has been free on $200,000 bond.

Iran: Uranium enrichment to be speeded up

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran will step up its uranium enrichment program by sharply increasing the number of centrifuges used to make nuclear fuel, a senior official said Wednesday, in direct defiance of Western demands.

The statement by Iran's nuclear chief, Fereidoun Abbasi, is likely to escalate tensions. The West suspects Iran's nuclear program could be headed toward weapons production and has imposed punishing sanctions to try to persuade Tehran to stop enrichment.

Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is peaceful and geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Uranium enriched to a low level is used to produce nuclear fuel for reactors, but high level enrichment would make it suitable for use in atomic warheads.

Abbasi said Iran is making nuclear advances in the face of the severe economic measures imposed by the U.N. and the West.

"Despite sanctions, we will most likely see a substantial increase in the number of centrifuge machines this year. We will continue enrichment with intensity," Abbasi was quoted by state TV as saying Wednesday. The Iranian calendar year ends on March 20.

Abbasi did not say if Iran's stepped up work would be at the five percent fuel level or the higher 20 percent quality, which has worried the West because it can be purified to weapons grade more quickly. There have been indications that Iran may push its enrichment even higher than the 20 percent acknowledged to U.N. nuclear watchdogs.

His remarks came days after the U.N. agency said Iran is about to double its output of higher enriched uranium at its fortified Fordo underground facility. That could move Iran closer to weapons capability.

A Nov. 8 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran has installed about 2,800 centrifuges at Fordo and is poised to double the number of operating centrifuges, from the current 700 to nearly 1,400.

Iran says it needs 20 percent enriched uranium to make fuel for a medical research reactor in Tehran that produces isotopes for about 1 million patients annually.

Abbasi also said Iran will soon conduct a test run of its heavy water reactor in Arak in central Iran, despite demands from the U.N. to stop the work. The test will use virtual fuel, not actual radioactive material, he said.

He said construction of the 40-megawatt research reactor is progressing on schedule, but he noted that experts are handling the project with greater care in anticipation of possible sabotage attempts.

"The Arak reactor is progressing without any problem according to the schedule. Only because of security considerations, we are moving with caution, since enemy intends to harm this reactor," he was quoted by state TV as saying. "All the equipment needed to operate this reactor has been purchased."

The West is concerned that the heavy water reactor could produce enough plutonium for a nuclear weapon each year, if the spent fuel is reprocessed. That would be another pathway for bomb-grade material, but Iran is not known to possess a plutonium reprocessing facility

Iran has experienced explosions and malfunctions at its nuclear and industrial sites, partly due to faulty equipment secretly procured on the global market.

Also, Iran says it is the target of a campaign that has included the abduction and assassination of scientists, the sale of faulty equipment and the planting of a destructive computer worm known as Stuxnet, which briefly brought Iran's uranium enrichment activity to a halt in 2010.

RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race

Rupaul's All Stars Drag Race. Chad Michaels wins?Rupaul's All Stars Drag Race.

LogoTV.

While I haven?t seen a ton of reaction online so far (almost everyone seems to watch Drag Race online a day late because Logo is a weird channel no one actually has), the general vibe of the responses that have cropped up are pretty much in line with the ?eh, sure? sentiment that Jeff and I expressed last night. In retrospect, Chad Michaels seems to have been cruising for the win for the past few episodes, and in light of the missteps of the other three challengers (or really, two, since Shannel was never really a contender) last night, there really was no other option?Michaels triumphed handily.

But some pundits, like EW?s Tanner Stransky, are already floating conspiracy theories about the final result. ?Was?Drag Race All Stars?created just so Chad Michaels could be crowned the winner? It seems like a distinct possibility, in a weird way. Chad clearly deserved the season 4 crown just as much as Sharon [Needles] ? and it oddly came down to just a matter of taste between the goth-queen winner and the pretty-perfect Chad. Things in the?Drag Race?universe aren?t this Machiavellian, though, so I don?t know why I?m even headed down this road.?

Me either. As far as I can tell, the only thing Machiavellian about RPDR is the show?s cut-throat business sense. All Stars (like the under-produced Drag U) is more likely merely a calculated extension of the only lucrative brand Logo has going. No tea, no shade?but you know it?s true.

In any case, what?s lost in all this speculation about the structural forces that ?allowed? Chad to win is the fact that, even though she?s not my favorite in terms of style, she is a damn talented queen. I feel as though some of us are bandying about the words ?poised? and ?polished? like they are insults, when in fact, the kind of masterful professionalism Chad Michaels brings to her work (and make no mistake, she does treat it as serious work, which is not always the case in drag) is laudable. Sure, Sharon Needles from Season 4 or Manila Luzon are more my jam aesthetically, but we need to give respect where it is due?Chad Michaels earned this win on her own merits. I, for one, say kudos.

Now, is Chad truly the ?Queen of Queens?? That?s another question entirely, and one that I expect could only be answered by a real All Star competition featuring the actual winners of all the previous seasons rather than some random assortment of performers from the past. If my calculations are correct, Season V will give us a total of six winners (including Chad)?that number seems perfect for an authentic best-of-the-best (and team-free!) set-up next fall. All will be revealed at that time, I guess.

Until then, keep your eyelashes affixed and her wigs askew, ladies. It?s been fierce!

Bedroom Interior Design Tips ? Make Your Home Special | Home ...

The bedroom is probably the most important room in the house since it is where you escape from the hustles and bustles of the world. The fact that the bedroom is a place to rest means the decor should be such that it creates an atmosphere conducive for this.

Ensure the doors and windows are of the highest quality. The best options are UPVC windows and doors. These windows and doors are not only durable, but they also have great aesthetic value and they can give your bedroom an instant face-lift. These doors and windows are also monsoon, termite, dust, and sound-proof and they are energy saving.

The best person to do bedroom interior design is a professional. Interior designers have the training and experience necessary to do a good job. You will actually save money when you hire an interior designer since this means you do not have to buy the tools, equipment, and supplies needed for the job. Interior design takes time and energy and it could interfere with your work/business or your social life and you should, therefore, consider outsourcing the job.

The bedroom decor should match with the rest of the house. It should not compete with it. When you hire an interior designer to decorate home, ensure that he/she also does the bedroom.

Pick a new place for your computer and other electronics. Electronics have no place in the bedroom since they interrupt your sleep and they prevent you from having restorative sleep. You should, even, consider banishing your cell phone from your bedroom.

The selection of furniture is very important in bedroom decor. Just as important is how you arrange the different furniture items. The arrangement should be such that it makes your bedroom a sanctuary for relaxation and rest. The bed should be luxurious and its color should be such that it evokes calm and happy feelings. If you have limited space, go for a monochromatic color scheme for your bed dressing.

As part of the bedroom decor, maximize bedroom storage area use. Use closets (walk-in closets and not cramped closets) and under-the-bed storage systems whenever you can. Ensure that there is as much natural light into the bedroom as possible. The windows should be such that they allow in sunlight and the color of the wall should be soothing so that the lighting is not overwhelming. Use lighting fixtures to brighten up dark corners.

Follow Feng Shui principles and include a number of plants in the bedroom for balance and harmony in your life. Plants enliven the bedroom. Keep the bedroom clutter-free.

An important tip in bedroom interior design is that you should consider what is in style. This is important because it ensures that you will not change the bedroom decor just a few months after decorating. You could read up on what is in style in home improvement and interior design magazines and in discussion forums, blogs, and other online communities. You could visit top hotels for tips on what is in and what is not. You could also get inspiration from the websites of top interior designers.

Exec embroiled in HP-Autonomy mess lashes out

(AP) ? An executive vilified by Hewlett-Packard Co. on allegations of an accounting ruse is escalating his counter-attack on the company accusing him.

In a letter to HP's board released Tuesday, former Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch fiercely defended his integrity. He also questions whether HP is using the charges of financial shenanigans to cover up damage caused by its own ineptitude.

HP fired back with a statement that predicted its findings of misconduct will be proven in anticipated legal proceedings about the dispute.

Lynch's missive represented his most extensive remarks since HP accused him last week of deceiving the company about the growth of Autonomy, a business software maker that HP bought for $10 billion last year. He had previously denied HP's accusations in interviews with various news organizations.

HP absorbed an $8.8 billion charge to reflect Autonomy isn't worth what the company paid. About $5 billion of that charge stemmed from improper accounting, according to HP.

"Can HP really state that no part of the $5 billion write down was, or should be, attributed to HP's operational and financial mismanagement of Autonomy since the acquisition?" Lynch wondered in his letter. He demanded that HP's board provide more specifics about how it arrived at its calculations.

The Autonomy mess has deepened a steep decline in HP's stock price, which has cut the Palo Alto, Calif., company's market value in half since the beginning of the year. HP had already been struggling because its personal computer and printer businesses have been faltering as more people buy smartphones and tablet computers. HP's stock fell 38 cents Tuesday to close at $12.36.

HP CEO Meg Whitman said last week that she fired Lynch in May because Autonomy wasn't hitting its financial targets. After Lynch departed, Whitman said a whistleblower triggered an extensive investigation that culminated in HP's conclusion that it had been duped before it agreed to buy the British company. HP said it has handed its findings over to securities regulators in the U.S. and the U.K., as well as the U.S Justice Department.

Even if authorities don't file charges, HP said it plans to take legal action against the people it believes manipulated Autonomy's finances.

"We look forward to hearing Dr. Lynch and other former Autonomy employees answer questions under penalty of perjury," HP said in a statement. The honorific in HP's statement refers to Lynch's doctorate in computing.

HP, meanwhile, faces at least one shareholder lawsuit. On Monday, a stockholder who owns 200 shares accused HP of concealing problems with Autonomy and other acquisition.

Lynch said he wished he had been given a chance to help "make HP great again. I have been truly saddened by the events of the past months, and am shocked and appalled by the events of the past week."

5 Financial Tips for Filipino Freelancers

This is a guest post by Lianne Martha Laroya, freelance writer, personal finance blogger, and adviser. Check out her blog The Wise Living for tips and insights on personal finance, living a great lifestyle, and more.

Having no income is bad. Not caring for your regular income is worse. But recklessly spending and not even projecting a spending plan for your irregular income? It?s the worst.

Being a freelancer is one of the most fulfilling professions a Filipino can have. You are your own boss, you set your own time, and you get to decide whether to give yourself a raise or not.

And let?s face it: Filipinos have inherent family-centered values, so being able to work from home with our loved ones brings home the cake.

But, being a freelancer also means more responsibility; after all, you?re running your own company. You deal with insurance, invoicing, saving for retirement, and paying taxes. You?re plagued by throbbing headaches and swollen eyes. You may even have difficulty sleeping at night because of your irregular income.

Protect yourself and your freelancing profession by following these personal finance tips:

1. Prioritize Basic Budgeting

You can never be at a healthy personal finance state if you don?t even have a customized spending plan.

Start with basic budgeting?list down your basic needs (like utilities, internet, food allowance, transportation, office supplies, projected tax due, health insurance and retirement savings). Estimate a figure for each category.

Basic budgeting means focusing on the essentials so that you have a solid idea on where to focus your funds on, if ever things get a bit slow. We can always eat out at restaurants or watch a quality movie some other time, right?

2. Build an Emergency Fund

You might be a full-time employee doing part-time freelance work or you might be a full-time freelancer right now. It doesn?t really matter.

If you don?t have three to six months? worth of funds that can sustain your basic budgeting, you should start saving now. This helps you sleep better at night and keeps you from asking for money from relatives, in case things get tough.

3. Shop Around for Adequate Health Insurance

Health insurance is something that everyone can get now, even if they?re not part of the corporate world.

Do yourself and your wallet a favor by getting one for yourself. Yes, you might consider it as a waste of good money when you?re paying for it monthly, but once your medical bills are covered by your health insurance coverage, you?re going to thank God you decided to get one.

4. Set Aside Monthly Retirement Savings

Freelancers are patient, wise, determined and good-looking (yes, you read that right) people, so they deserve to retire comfortably. Yes, you might only be in your twenties right now and retirement may seem eons away, but it?s never too early to save for retirement!

Shop around for great investment vehicles: treasury bonds, mutual funds or the stock market can give you great options. Just remember to not let your retirement savings sleep in your bank account. Inflation will just eat it all up!

5. Don?t Get Trapped in Lifestyle Inflation

Lifestyle inflation is when you overspend on a necessity and convert it into a luxury.

Don?t get me wrong, luxury is good when it is in rare occasions. After all, we can only savor it if we don?t get much of it, right?

However, when you regularly eat out at restaurants, buy unnecessary clothes or watch movies each time, there might be a problem here. Say ?no? to lifestyle inflation. It will just make you feel bad when the feast is over and when famine comes in again. It won?t do us any good.

Health News - Robots being used as classroom buddies for children ...

Robots are being used as classroom buddies for children with autism in a groundbreaking initiative that aims to improve social interaction and communication.

Max and Ben, two knee-high humanoid robots that can dance to ?Thriller?, play games and emulate Tai Chi, are to be showcased by researchers at the University of Birmingham as part of the ESRC festival of Social Sciences.

The Aldebaran robots, which have been trialled by pupils at Topcliffe Primary School in Castle Vale, Birmingham since March, are the latest in a range of innovative technologies that will be on display at the school tomorrow (Thurs 8th November).

The event is about using technologies to help children with autism. Children, teachers and researchers will demonstrate the latest technologies and share their experiences of using them in the classroom.

Dr Karen Guldberg, from the University of Birmingham?s School of Education, said: ?We have been looking at how technology can support pupils with autism to communicate more effectively.

?Pupils and teachers are experimenting with the robots and other technologies in a developmental way and they are showing significant benefits for the classroom. The robots have been modelling good behaviour and acting as buddies.?

Research shows that children with autism often find computers and technology safe, motivating and engaging, particularly in the areas of social interaction and communication.

Ian Lowe, headteacher at Topcliffe Primary, said: ?The robots have been brilliant at supporting autistic children with their learning. You can program them to teach language, play games and model behaviour. We have even used them in assemblies. In the future we are looking to see if they can be used to support learning not just at school but at home as well.?

Aldebaran robotics are world leaders in the development of a humanoid robot. Topcliffe have hosted two robots in their classrooms since March 2012.

The Festival of Social Science is run by the Economic and Social Research Council which runs from 3-10 November 2012. With events from some of the country?s leading social scientists, the Festival celebrates the very best of British social science research and how it influences our social, economic and political lives - both now and in the future.

Russian foreign minister meets Syrian defector

BEIRUT (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister says he has met with a top Syrian defector in Jordan in a rare, high-level contact between the Moscow government and a Syrian opposition figure.

Russia is one of the strongest international supporters of President Bashar Assad's regime.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday he met Riad Hijab, the former Syrian prime minister who defected to Jordan in August. He said he wanted to get firsthand information from the Syrian opposition on how they view a solution to the civil war.

Why I'm throwing my kid a low-key birthday party | BabyCenter Blog

My son turns four in December. Last year, when I stared at the chocolate cake stamped into my carpet, wondering if my hearing would ever return, I swore next birthday we wouldn?t have the party at my house. Oh yes, we were going somewhere.

But here we are, five weeks out, and I?m questioning myself. I?ve gone over it and over it in my head. Majority of the places I?ve called will allow around 20 children. I made a list and can?t come up with more than 12 kids in my head. The cheapest option out there? $200. $200 y?all!

I?ve been debating buying him a LeapPad for his birthday but finally decided no based on the price. Yet, I thought nothing of spending that much money on a party he?ll barely remember, when he?d have just as much fun with just a few friends or heck, just family? Sheesh, what am I doing?

I?m not sure why I feel he needs a big party. He doesn?t. He?s going to be four, for Pete?s sake. He?s content playing with two or three friends. Twenty friends? He?d barely know who all was there. Then you have to think about parents and siblings and food. It?s overwhelming. Is it other parents/ past parties that make me feel this way? I?m don?t know, but I think I?ve finally come to my senses.

We?re going to have a birthday play date at our house the Friday morning before his birthday with a few friends from school. I?ll get Donut Holes and they can run around and play. Then on Saturday, we?ll have a nice (read: small) party with the family. The family party will have the Spider Man cake that he?s so desperate to have. He?ll be happy and I?ll be happy.

I?ll worry about bigger parties when he gets a bit older. Or maybe I won?t and we?ll just have him invite one or two friends over for dinner.

What do you think? What do you do for your kid?s birthday parties?

HP becomes a platinum member of the Linux Foundation

Snagging a first-class upgrade might empty out the contents of your wallet, but be glad you're not trying to buy your way to the Linux Foundation's top table. With a strategic investment of $500,000, Hewlett Packard has just become a platinum member of the body, alongside companies like Intel, Qualcomm and Samsung. In exchange for all that cash, HP gets a seat on the Foundation's board of directors and will have a say in how to advance the foundation's aims -- and hopefully give Open webOS a gentle push, too.

In this Sunday, Nov. 04, 2012 photo, a damaged building is seen through a window after several weeks of intense battles between rebel fighters and the Syrian army in the Jedida district of Aleppo, Syria. The uprising against President Bashar Assad started with peaceful demonstrations in March last year, but has since morphed into a bloody civil war. (AP) ? Gunmen shot and killed the brother of Syria's parliament speaker as he drove to work in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, the state-run news agency reported on Tuesday.

It was the latest in a wave of assassinations targeting Syrian officials, army officers and other prominent supporters of President Bashar Assad's regime. Four of the president's top security aides were killed in a rebel bombing of state security headquarters in Damascus on July 18, including the defense minister and Assad's brother-in-law.

The SANA news agency said Mohammed Osama Laham, brother of Parliament Speaker Jihad Laham, was killed in the Damascus neighborhood of Midan.

The killing came a day after some of the most intense fighting in Damascus in months. On Tuesday, activists and state media reported clashes, shelling and air raids in different parts of Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said air raids on Houla, a group of villages in central province of Homs, killed seven people. The group also reported air raids on the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Maadamiyeh saying there are casualties without giving numbers.

SANA said six regime supporters were killed when 11 mortars rounds fell near a pro-government demonstration Monday night in the northern city of Aleppo.

The Observatory said Syrian troops shelled two villages on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights adding that government forces have been trying to take over the area for days.

On Monday, the Israeli military said a bullet from Syria struck one of its vehicles traveling on the Israeli side of the cease-fire line in the Golan Heights. No one was wounded in the incident. The Israel-Syria border has been quiet since a 1974 armistice agreement. Such incidents have been rare.

Israel is concerned that violence from Syria's civil war could spill into the country. Earlier this week, three Syrian tanks entered a demilitarized zone between the countries. Several Syrian shells, apparently misfired, have exploded inside Israel.

Sales, prices for condos, homes increase from '11 - Business - The ...

JOHN GILLIE | Staff writer ? Published November 06, 2012 Modified November 05, 2012

Single-family home prices showed a significant rebound in year-over-year comparisons in Pierce, King and Thurston counties last month as the supply of homes on the market continued to shrink.

The median Pierce County home sales price rose by 6.97 percent to $201,000 in October from $188,000 the same time last year, the Northwest Multiple Listing Service said. In Thurston County, median prices rose to $220,000 from $212,500, and in King County, median home sales prices hit $370,000, 15.63 percent higher than the $320,000 from a year ago October.

Single-family home sales in Pierce County rose 12.21 percent from October 2011. Thurston County single-family home sales rose 20.75 percent. Condo sales in Pierce County were up 88.89 percent from the same period last year. In Thurston County, condo sales were up 50 percent over same period last year.

Those encouraging October figures followed disappointing price declines in Pierce and Thurston counties in August and a minuscule increase in King County single-family home prices that same month.

September figures turned positive again for Pierce and King County single-family home prices while continuing to fall in Thurston County.

Condo prices jumped even more dramatically in the three counties: Pierce condo prices were up 9.11 percent; King County condo sales amounts increased by 24.37 percent, and condo prices in Thurston County leaped by 47.69 percent, from a median of $104,950 in October 2011 to $155,000 last month.

Real estate experts said a constrained supply of homes and condos on the market was partially behind the price trends.

Total active listings for both single-family homes and condos in Pierce County in October this year are down 30.05 percent. In Thurston County, they were off more than 25 percent. In King County, listings declined by 43.65 percent.

Last month?s housing inventory around Western Washington fell to its lowest level since February 2006, according to statistics from the 21-county Northwest Multiple Listing Service. The report showed year-over-year prices on closed sales area-wide increased by double digits for the first time since March 2007.

Compared with median prices at the beginning of the year in January, median home sales prices were up in all three counties. In January in Pierce County, the median home sales price was $178,000. In Thurston County, the median price for homes sold in January was $209,950. In King County, the median home sales price was $315,000 in January.

(AP) ? Researchers are reporting a key advance in using stem cells to repair hearts damaged by heart attacks.

In a study in Miami and Baltimore, stem cells donated by strangers proved as safe and effective as patients' own cells for helping restore heart tissue, allowing the heart to pump more effectively.

The work involved just 30 patients, but proves the concept that anyone's cells can be used to treat such cases. Doctors are excited because this suggests that stem cells could be banked for off-the-shelf use in patients after heart attacks the way blood is saved now.

Stem cell therapy reduced the scarred area of patients' hearts by about one third. Results were discussed Monday at a heart conference in California.

By Us Weekly

The truth has set Amanda Bynes free.?A recent In Touch magazine article claimed the "What I Like About You" actress looked "painfully thin" and "seemed totally out of it" while visiting a New York City area tanning salon. The tabloid also reported Bynes paraded around the facility without any clothes on. "She didn't seem to care that everyone saw her naked," according to an alleged witness.?

PHOTOS: Amanda Bynes' life in the spotlight

Bynes denied the story Nov. 1, telling Us Weekly exclusively, "I'm suing In Touch for printing a fake story. I'm not 'troubled.' I don't get naked in public. I'm 26, a multi-millionaire, retired. Please respect my privacy."

Beach Bum Tanning CEO James Oliver is standing by Bynes' denial. "Employee testimony and security footage have confirmed that Ms. Bynes was not acting inappropriately," he tells Us in a statement. "She is a long-time client and we stand by her account."

Unfortunately, Bynes' headline-making days are far from over. In late September, the "Easy A" star pleaded not guilty to two separate counts of hit-and-run driving; if convicted, she could face up to a year in jail. She is also facing one DUI charge and two charges of driving on a suspended license.

(AP) ? Military prosecutors say the soldier accused of killing 16 villagers in a nighttime rampage in Afghanistan returned to his base with the blood of his victims on his rifle, belt, shirt and pants.

Prosecutor Lt. Col. Jay Morse says Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was incredulous when fellow U.S. soldiers drew their weapons on him when he returned to Camp Belambay in southern Afghanistan last March.

Morse says Bales turned to one sergeant at the scene and said: "Mac, if you rat me out..."

Bales has been charged with 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder in the attack on two villages. Nine of the victims were children.

The hearing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., will help determine whether his case goes to a court martial.
