(AP) ? Nestled nearly 5,000 feet beneath the earth in the gold boom town of Lead, S.D., is a laboratory that could help scientists answer some pretty heavy questions about life, its origins and the universe.

It's hard to spot from the surface. Looking around the rustic town, there are far more nods to its mining past than to its scientific future. But on Wednesday, when part of the Homestake Gold Mine officially became an underground campus, Lead became the place where the elusive stuff called dark matter might finally be detected.

Unimpressed? Consider this: It's sure to earn itself a reference on TV's "The Big Bang Theory."

"This year, 2012, is going to be a very significant year because we get to turn the ... detector on and know very soon whether we have actually found dark matter or not," said Rick Gaitskell, a scientist with Brown University who has worked alongside dozens of scientists over the past few years to move forward with the Large Underground Xenon experiment ? or LUX ? the world's most sensitive dark-matter detector.

For most people, dark matter is a term that made their eyes glaze over in science class. But for Gaitskell and other scientists, it's the mystery meat of existence.

"It's this huge piece of the puzzle that's just missing for us," said Tom Schutt, a scientist with Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who was on hand for the unveiling of the lab Wednesday.

Regular matter ? people and planets, for example ? make up about 4 percent of the total mass-energy of the universe. Scientists estimate that dark matter makes up about 25 percent.

Scientists know it exists by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, dark matter undetectable. Gaitskell ? who said he's been "hunting dark matter" for 23 years ? and his colleagues know only that it could explain why the universe isn't made up equally of matter and antimatter. That, in turn, could explain how the world as we know it came to be.

Gaitskell and Schutt were among a handful of scientists Wednesday who greeted Gov. Dennis Daugaard, former Gov. Mike Rounds, philanthropist T. Denny Sanford and dozens of scientists and journalists who took the 11-minute ride down a shaft that had been used by countless miners for more than a century.

Beneath the earth are 370 miles of tunnels over 7,700 acres. The new lab takes up about 10,000 square feet, leaving plenty of room for expansion. The once-grimy mine has been washed clean and painted white. Concrete paths were poured for easier walking, and clean rooms ensure that the experiments won't be tainted.

Now the site's ideal, said Kevin Lesko, of Lawrence Berkley National Lab, who is the principal investigator for the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Dark matter is too sensitive to detect in normal laboratories, but one so far underground would help shield it from pesky cosmic radiation. Also, the LUX detector is submerged in water, further insulating it.

The unveiling was a long time coming: The mine opened during the Black Hills' gold rush in 1876 and outlasted many counterparts. In the late 1990s, it employed about 1,000 people, but as the value of gold dropped, hundreds of miners gradually lost their jobs. The mine shuttered for good in 2003.

The science community seized on the closure for its lab potential. Gaitskell said he's worked with 70 scientists and 14 institutions over the past four years to make the LUX experiment a reality.

That detector is in the Davis Campus, named after Ray Davis, who won a Nobel Prize for Physics for an experiment he started in 1965 inside the then-working mine. Davis died six years ago; his widow, Anna Davis, brought a replica of her husband's prize to Wednesday's unveiling.

Nearby in a new hall called the Transition Area will be the Majorana Demonstrator Experiment. That's aimed to search for a rare form of radioactive decay, which could help physicists understand how the universe evolved.

Experiments are set to begin this year, said Bill Harlan, spokesman for the research facility. All told, the site has cost more than $300 million ? a mix of private donations and state and federal funding. Daily operation costs are covered by the U.S. Department of Energy.

About 70 former mine workers now work for the lab. Greg King, a lifelong Lead resident, is one of them.

"The whole town was built up around the Homestake," King said. "As the property closed and people left, a lot of employees left. Now, there's a lot of excitement in town. People are very thrilled that the Homestake is once again, albeit not as a mine."

Liz Tiger, who owns a consignment store on Main Street, said the resurrection of the mine represents hope for Lead, a town of about 3,100 residents about a half-hour from the Wyoming border. Three generations of Tiger's family worked for the mining company.

"The economy up here really died after Homestake shut down," she said. "It was absolutely devastating."

Had it not been for Deadwood, Lead's higher-profile neighbor that draws about 2 million tourists a year, the town might have gone under, she said.

"I was raised through Homestake. I was very sad when it was shut down. (The mine) definitely needed to be used for something."

Farmhouses, Yellow Fields and Spargel | Family Tree Tours

German trip May 2012

Well I am home from Germany now and I always have good intentions of blogging every day when I am there, but that never happens. Never enough time, although I do take train or car time to jot down a few notes. ?So, I will try to write about things now as I look through the pictures.

We usually do a trip in May because Germany is such a pleasure to the eye in May. Yellow fields of rapeseed blooming in fields scattered over the hillsides looking like a patchwork quilt, tons of lilacs blooming and rhododendron and hydrangea. ?It was gorgeous.

I had a few days before we met our clients for a personal heritage tour and we decided to visit a local ?landlord?s? house called Schloss Hunnefeld, located near Bad Essen. In the olden days the landlord was the person who was in charge of collecting the rents and taxes from the small farmers. ?In the 13th century Schloss Hunnefeld ? was a moated ?water? castle. ?Today you come down a long lane into a large clearing and see the impressive residence. The building is a three-winged two story in the Renaissance style. ?There is a small island in the moat now and behind it a beautiful English garden. ?There also is French style dovecote from the 1700?s. ?I could picture the small farmer walking his way down the long lane with his hard earned money or livestock or whatever he had as payment.

In the building where the caf? is now was the counting house, or the place where taxes and rents were collected. ? I guess a little history of the ?farm system? in Germany is in order. ?Of course this is a generalization, different areas had different laws and different systems but the farm system had been around for centuries, its roots go back to the Germanic tribes, who were nomads and whose economy was based on summer military campaigns, in which the men earned the tribes living by plunder. ?When they settled down to more agricultural pursuits versus the nomadic lifestyle, they needed the protection against other marauding tribes so they pledged service and fealty to their warrior overlords. ?By the end of the Middle Ages, military protection by the overlords was not needed as much, so the overlords settled down too. ?Land and income from agricultural products replaced plunder as their primary source of income, and the relationship of overlord and peasant farmer became firmly established. ?At least this is what I have read and I am sure there are probably more complicated reasons but this serf and lord system was around for centuries and German villages and farms used to ?belong? to someone that they owed taxes and rents too. ?We have found records for some of these big farms that list all the small farms they owned and how much they collected etc. ?Sometimes (not sure how often as I have not personally seen that many) they might list the farmers names that were under their control. ?Of course in the Northwest of Germany the larger farms had the names and whoever lived there took that name. But that is a story for another day.

Stand Up for WWE: WWE issues a second statement about the Journal Inquirer and Darien Times columns

To provide further clarification on WWE?s recent letters to Chris Powell of the Journal Inquirer and Joshua Fisher of the Darien Times, the WWE issues the following statement:

?WWE is a global television content creator and a publicly traded company whose core business is monetizing that very television content. When our content is unfairly mischaracterized, it seriously jeopardizes our business.

Since 2008, all WWE broadcast programming has been rated TV-PG and prior to that some of our programming had a rating of TV-14. WWE?s content ratings are set not by us, but by the network TV distributors (NBCUniversal) and their standards and practices departments. According to the TV Parental Guidelines established by the television industry and adopted by the Federal Communications Commission, neither TV-PG nor TV-14 content would be considered pornography or anything close to it. In addition, the FCC would not permit our content to air on network or basic cable television if it were pornographic.

WWE refuses to be bullied and will not allow our content to be inaccurately categorized. This is not about politics or Linda McMahon?s (former CEO of WWE) candidacy. This is about protecting WWE?s business and setting the record straight that WWE has never been in the business of pornography. We must vigorously defend our company with any and all resources at our disposal.?

Building Your Personal Real Estate Brand - The Touch Marketing ...

Recently, we spoke to an agent who was on the verge of caving in to the industry-wide trend toward standardized cookie-cutter websites (encouraged by corporate deals at the franchise and brokerage level).

To combat the resulting sameness, he was thinking about spending enormous sums on industrial-strength commercial SEO. After all, when thousands of real estate websites look the same and offer the same information, you have got to do something to avoid washing away into the ocean of corporate uniformity. Sadly, our friend may find many others taking the very same short cut.

But why not start from scratch with a commitment to create a fascinating real estate brand for yourself?

From a clip for the real estate training video, Madasgascar 3 (yes, go ahead and write off your copy of the DVD), we draw three suggestions for creating a fascinating real estate brand:

1. Be different. The Madagascar series of animated films have created a unique cast of characters. Those ridiculous penguins and other animal characters come to mind (who is your favourite?). They created a brand worth hundreds of millions of dollars with those personalities.

2. Be familiar. Once they created their brilliantly successful brand, they stuck with it. Parents of young children, everywhere, have ?I like to move it, move it?, rattling around somewhere in their brains. Are you just another agent blending into the woodwork at ABC Franchise and DEF Brokerage, or are you using their resources as a platform for building a personal brand that is familiar to everyone in your community?

3. Be entertaining. As Madagascar 3 arrives in the theatres in June, the pressure is on. Some of the film reviewers are saying that this film will be better than Madagascar 1 and 2. Are you planning to make your clients happy, today?

For assistance with your real estate branding, talk to us, info@thetouchmarketing.com.

America's Got Talent Recap: Tampa or Bust

The America's Got Talent auditions continued to roll on in Tampa Bay, Florida tonight - and Nick Cannon continued to hog the spotlight. The producers really need to tone down the amount of Nick interacting with the contestants. Seriously. This isn't Nick Cannon's Got Friends.

Overall, there weren’t a lot of great performances. The weird acts that we watched included a haircutter that tried to be Edward Scissorhands; a stunning but stereotypical hula hooper; an above-average magician; and a "Boss" dance group that may be a little too out there for mainstream America.

I don't think that any of the acts we witnessed here will win this season.

Lindsey Norton Audition

Good, Great
All That! - Every few years a good clogging team arrives and does decently. Any clogging team should have precision and strong formations and they strong precision but only okay formations. All That! seems to have a bit of an age issue combined with a lack of staging. Some more dynamic music, lighting, stronger formations, and possibly less clothing would make them more Vegas ready and create a winning combination.

The Distinguished Men of Brass - I liked the combined singing and marching band segments which gave them the right edge from a drumline. Only a little bit of production value could make them interesting, but the real question is if they could go beyond being a theme park performers.

Middle Ground
Inspired the Fire - "Urban Glee" had a positive message but I thought the introduction was a bit weak with the solos not having enough power. When they got to the dance section, they were stronger but they lacked precision. There was too much chaos between the dances and the only parts that were synchronized were very basic steps. The group needs more polish to move on.

Ulysses - The TV fan in his good luck Cosby-esque sweater had a nice voice and a bit of a niche (TV Theme Songs) and I could see production having a great time with him (See: Kinetic King).

Epic Fails
NC Bikini Bombshells - Team Jiggles didn't need to do much to win over the men, but their dancing was awful. You know what they needed? A car to dance on top of. Or hot wings. Tons of hot wings.

Michael Griffin - He was hung from the back of a horse. Enough said. He looked like he had a seizure, but he did get out.

Nonetheless, due to the period variances around the world, this era simply can last for about 48 hours.

What is a trading margin?

Forex trading positions come in a lot of $100,1000. When you provide that amount of money to cover your situation when you can industry, the market industry would once once again always be restricted to banking institutions along with other institutional people. So brokerages established the principle associated with perimeter trading. In essence they allow visitors to buy and sell $100,Thousand hindrances of currency whether they can provide an part of security towards prospective deficits.

As an example, they may permit individuals to industry over a margin involving 1% (compared, standard stock agents usually have to have a 50% perimeter). Which means that they can trade $100,000 obstructs, furnished their account includes at least $100,000 by 1% = $1000. One thousand dollars will guard the dealer in opposition to any kind of potential deficits that their client can make (forex ideals hardly ever fluctuate by greater than 1% within a morning). If your company?s accounts can be decreased through deficits (i.e. lowering the broker?s protection down below suitable ranges), your specialist can near just about all investments along with demand one more deposit just before even more investments can be produced.

Trading margin lets people to regulate immeasureable forex wiith fairly small quantities of funds (often Fifty, Hundred as well as 200 occasions the quantity of money they have expended). This may lead to massive benefits, yet boosts the probability of shedding the majority of or perhaps your growth capital.

Simply how much will it cost?

Due to the trading border made available from most Foreign exchange brokers, it?s possible to open up a forex account and acquire started out buying and selling which has a comparatively small amount of money.

Forex trades are made in plenty of $100,Thousand. Nonetheless, most Forexs brokes will provide you with the influence percentage all the way to 100:A single, so that you will find the ability to control any $100,1000 have business dealings with as few as $1000 with your consideration. A few brokerages will provide influence associated with 2 hundred:One particular or perhaps 500:1, that allows you to definitely start with as low as $500 or perhaps $250 in your consideration.

Even so, please remember that despite the fact that increased control enables you to improve your profit potential, additionally, it enhances the danger issue. The greater the control ratio, smaller exchanging variation that will be required to eliminate your current buying and selling capital. So pick the level of power that you employ wisely.
For brand new merchants, it could be safer to start with power associated with Twenty:A single or even 55:1. This will increase the amount you?ll want to wide open a forex account, nevertheless it can decrease the risk of seeing all your trading funds fade away because of a little change in the value of the currency exchange.

Congress to spend more on tanks than military wants

By Agence France-Presse
Saturday, May 26, 2012 5:49 EDT

?

The US Congress is poised to approve more funds for modernizing the US Army?s main battle tank despite objections from the military that it puts the Pentagon?s overall strategy in jeopardy.

In its 2013 budget proposal, which begins in October, the Obama administration requested $74 million to upgrade the M1A2 Abrams tank, which originally was intended for land warfare in the plains of central Europe.

But, just as it did last year, the Congress has turned a deaf ear to the Pentagon, with the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passing a defense authorization bill last week that adds an additional $181 million to the program.

In the Senate, Democrats have also gone way beyond the administration?s request and in the Senate Armed Services committee approved an additional $91 million for 33 extra tanks to be upgraded.

?The conundrum we have is that we don?t need the tanks,? General Raymond Odierno, the army chief of staff, told members of Congress.

?Our tank fleet is two-and-a-half years old (on) average now. It?s been recapped, its been reset, we?re in good shape, and these are additional tanks that we don?t need.?

The defense bill is expected to go to the Senate floor next week. The House and Senate versions, with their differing amounts for the Abrams, will then have to be reconciled.

Lawmakers say the additional spending is needed to keep production lines open at the Ohio factory where upgraded tanks are built. They say at least 70 tanks a year must be built for the factory to stay open.

However, Pentagon officials fear that in a time of budget cutbacks, the extra spending on the Abrams and other programs favored by Congress will undercut competing plans considered essential to the US strategy toward Asia.

?There is no free lunch,? US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned lawmakers earlier this month.

?And if members try to restore their favorite programs without regard to an overall strategy the cuts will have to come from areas that could impact overall readiness,? he said.

Why Most of your Facebook Fans Don?t See Any of your Posts

Just like Google, no one knows exactly how Facebook?s algorithm works. But unlike Google where most content gets into the search engine and can be found for years, if no one interacts with your posts on Facebook, they are essentially gone. Once they are off the front page they have essentially disappeared forever. Sure, there?s a chance someone will find and read your old content, but it?s unlikely (get it, unlike -ly?). If someone truly likes you they want to hear from you.

Number of Fans not as Important as Level of Engagement

I?ve seen various figures about what percentage of your Facebook Page fans see your content, but it?s not ever very high. Anything above 10% is pretty good. And the larger your page, the lower the engagement drops.

To find what percentage of engagement your page gets, take the # of likes for your page divided by the number of people ?talking about? it. I wish I knew where I got this chart (help, please comment if you know). Once I got my engagement level in the 80% range for a client but I couldn?t maintain it. It?s consistently around 20%. This is why I rarely delete or ignore fans who post frequently. Instead I thank them and respond (unless they are obscene or vulgar). Think about it ? controversy sells! Every CEO I?ve worked with wants me to squelch the person who posts something negative. I say most of the time, leave it up! Let your fans come to your rescue. Chime in. Find ways to reward engagement from your fans and ways to build loyalty with them.

Interact with Brands you Like on Facebook

The bottom line is if you want to see content from brands you like, you need to share, like or comment on their posts. Otherwise they won?t show up in your newsfeed and you?ll forget all about them. Same goes for the fans of your Page. If you want to see all the brands you or someone else has liked (which is great for understanding your target market) simply type in your username followed by a slash and then ?favorites? like this: https://www.facebook.com/JanetThaeler/favorites Scroll down past interests and you?ll get to all of your likes. I?m not sure why that URL isn?t /likes but not my call.

Go try this on your profile and you?ll see just how many pages you?ve liked but forgot all about. Then go and start interacting so you have a newsfeed full of content from brands and organizations that you really like. It beats having a newsfeed full of drama from your high school friends!

An Effective Way to Get Higher Engagement

What I?ve found most effective (besides large giveaways) for engagement on Facebook and Pinterest (link goes to my Pinterest for Business blog) are quotes that relate to your brand. My client?s page attracted people who want a quick pick me up that will make them feel good and inspire them in their faith. I started out simply typing in a daily quote.? Next I graduated to making quotes into graphics. That really enhanced the numbers of shares, likes and comments.

My best posts have a short question relating to the image and a killer image with a quote. Not too crafty and not too plain. In other words they like quotes that have background images over just text on a colored background. If I keep it short, the quotes also make ideal tweets (I have them tweeted automatically using Hootsuite). Then I use the same quotes in blog posts to get maximum search engine value and I pin the quotes on Pinterest. That?s a lot of bang for my buck!

P.S. I?m always looking for a tool to make quotes where I can add my own image and have choices of fonts and sizes. Let me know if you know of any.

Not All Interactions are Equal

When it comes to Facebook, not all interactions are equal. The share is king because it says you like something so much you?re willing to put your name on it and let your friends know.? These are usually very informative, timely or funny posts. Next important is a comment because that takes more effort than just clicking like (easy). The time of day you post something on Facebook is another factor because then more people will see it. Sound complex for a small business to pull all of this off well? That?s why there?s a rise in social media experts. It?s a lot to keep up with and do well! I invest a lot of time staying current and testing for that very reason.

Support the Brands you Love by Interacting with Them on Facebook and in Real Life

Think of this principle in real life. The longer and more often you ?engage? with a store (visit, go inside, talk to the owner or salesperson), the more likely you are to buy from them.? If you simply drive by it frequently it?s not going to help. Example: your local bookstore. You might be glad it?s there. It may add a lot to your community. It has character. People gather there. They bring in authors and have live performances. You really like them. But if you never make time to visit or buy books and instead order all of your books from Amazon.com what will happen to your local bookstore? Yes, exactly what is happening all over America. That bookstore will close. Either that or it will struggle. That?s why I?m willing to spend more to keep places I like in business and why I?m bugged when people only buy what is least expensive (they?re cheap). I?d rather not have a world full of asphalt, chain stores and Walmart!

So on Facebook if you truly like a brand show them! Go out of your way to comment and share their content. It?s a win/win for both.

Annette's websites of the week

Love Food Hate Waste- This week I?ve been sharing some of my favourite veggie recipes for National Vegetarian Week. On the search for veggie dishes I visited the Love Food Hate Waste website which is packed full of handy ways to prevent food and drink waste with top tips and fantastic recipes that use up food you might have otherwise thrown away.

As someone who really enjoys food I?m conscious about trying to get the most out of my groceries so LFHW?s website is perfect for me. I like the recipe search tool which uses categories according to the ingredients you have and the type of meal you want to make- a quick breakfast, light lunch or a vegetarian evening meal etc?

Love Food Hate Waste Website

Love Food Hate Waste

You?ll discover a huge variety of beautiful dishes which can be made out of pantry essentials and leftover, helping you save money and use all the delicious ingredients that you bought at the supermarket/grocers.

Also check out LFHW?s tips on ways to make sure you don?t over stock your fridge and how to control the amount of food you?re cooking. I?ve found the ?Perfect Portions? tool really helpful for ingredients such as pasta and rice- I always make more than I need.

Royal Horticultural Society- This week Royal Horticultural Society have been busy hosting the annual Chelsea Flower Show and it?s fair to say that they chose the perfect week as the sun hasn?t stopped shining.

I wrote a blog earlier in the week about my favourite gardens featured at this year?s show and since the RHS have handed out awards to their favourite gardens and gardeners. You can view all of the winners and nominee at the Chelsea Flower Show 2012 section of RHS website along with a host of photographs of the gardens and video footage from this year?s event.

Whilst at www.rhs.org.uk ?I also had a nosey around the site?s gardening section which has lots of information about how to tend your garden during the summer months. Including how to maintain a grow your own veggie patch, which is handy to read if your currently growing your own veggie, fruit and herbs like me.

This weekend is set to be a scorcher so why not try and get your grandchildren to help you around the garden. If they aren?t convinced read RHS?s top tips on gardening for the whole family where you?ll find fun garden tips aimed at children, but don?t forget the sunscreen.

Olympic Torch Relay- As I?m sure you already know the Olympic Torch Relay began its tour of the UK last weekend. The torch has already travelled from Land?s End to Worcester and is now en route to Cardiff before it tours Wales.

Throughout it?s week- long journey various famous people from the world of sport have carried the flame including Darren Campbell, Sharon Davies, Zara Phillips and Didier Drogba. Along with these sports personality?s people from local communities have also had the opportunity to carry the flame, which was saluted by two elephants at West midlands Safari Park yesterday.

BBC Olympic Torch Relay website

BBC Olympic Torch Relay

As the torch travels most people want to keep track of its whereabouts, including me. I?ve been tracking the torch via BBC News who has created a fantastic Torch Relay landing page that gives up to date coverage of the relay.

From here you can view a live video stream or read up to date reports of what?s happening on the relay. The page also includes an interactive map with the route highlighted and estimated times of arrival, plus pictures from the relay so far. A great resource which I?m sure I?ll be glued to next week when the torch arrived in Staffordshire.

Loyalty Startup Belly Hits 1 Millionth Check-In; Active Merchants Say Belly Check-ins Top Foursquare

belly Belly, the Chicago-based loyalty platform which just closed its $10 million Series B from Andreessen Horowitz?earlier this month, is today announcing a pretty significant milestone: its 1 millionth check-in. The startup allows customers to check-in to a location using a physical loyalty card or mobile app which they scan via a consumer-facing iPad installed at point-of-sale. By doing so, customers collect points that can later be redeemed for unique rewards tailored specifically for the business in question. The company has been growing fast, and CEO Logan LaHive tells us that in some of Belly's locations, there have been more Belly check-ins within its first month of being up-and-running, than the total number of Foursquare check-ins the business has seen to date.

Box Aims For Bigger Deployments With New Features Like Enterprise-Wide Search

Admin_Search_ScreenBox is releasing a number of new features today, with the broad theme of addressing "the needs of our largest enterprise customers in deploying this kind of technology," according to CEO Aaron Levie. Those features include the ability to search files across an entire company, a new dashboard offering more granular controls for company administrators, mobile security options like passcode locks, support for multiple email domains, activity notification archiving, and a new enterprise licensing agreement. Altogether, Levie says this means big companies can manage organization-wide Box deployments "at a scale that was never before possible." This should also help some of those larger customers address issues like regulatory compliance.

The Public Speaking Mindset

This article is Part 1 in a 3-part series on A?Smart Presentation and Public Speaking Skills

Before you read any of the other articles in the series, read this one first!

I can?t overemphasize the importance of the right public speaking and presentation mindset. ?I emphasize this because mindset is the only?way to learn to speak and present well. ?Thinking about and understanding?what makes a speech good or bad makes it easy to take the action needed (e.g. hand gestures, tone inflection, etc.) to give a spectacular presentation.

That?s completely different from the way most teach public speaking.

As I mentioned in the introduction to the series, public speaking and presentations are situational. ?It?s not a math equation, where you succeed by memorizing variables and processes. ?Being able to speak and present well means:

- Being able to think on your feet.

-Adapting what you have to say to the situation (e.g. the audience, the atmosphere, the size of the room, etc.).

- Coming across as confident?and making your message count?no matter what the situation.

Before learning the Public Speaking Mindset, understand a couple things about why you fear public speaking, and what you can do about it:

You probably fear public speaking because?it is situational and lacks a specific structure.

Do you fear public speaking for any of these reasons:

a.) What do I do if I get heckled by a member of the audience?

b.) How do I know if the information I?m presenting is what the audience wants to hear?

c.) What if I?m boring?

d.) What if I screw up?

If public speaking had a specific structure, there?s no way?you could fear any of these things: just like a math equation; you?d memorize how to say what, how to say it, and then give a great speech.

But think about it: how can you know what will happen during your presentation? ?How do you know your audience?s reaction? ?You won?t know for sure until you get there. ?Public speakers who accept speaking for what it is?a situational, fluid process?can get over silly ways to purportedly master public speaking (reading ?tips?) and get onto more useful techniques.

The only?way to improve your speaking abilities is through habit formation.? That comes only?with?practice.

Not?through reading books. ?Not?through reading my blog articles. ?Not?through talking about it with friends.

I think some will say ?that sucks! ?I?m not going out there to try to give a speech without knowing what I?m doing first!?

When I give a speech, it just happens. ?The speed at which I talk, the way I move my hands, the way I make eye contact, my tone inflections?I think about exactly none of it?when I?m talking.

I can do that because I?ve practiced like hell. ?It?s just a habit.

I recently gave a speech about an equity valuation my team and I did on a company. ?Half way through the speech, I offered to sell our ?patented? valuation model to the professor, or exchange it for a better grade. ?The audience broke out laughing! ?The professor?who usually never showed emotion?cracked a smile.

I hadn?t planned for that at all. ?It just seemed like the thing to say. ?And I was right; I think ours was the best speech of the 10 that were given that evening.

Think of trying to master public speaking through tip memorization like grocery shopping with a long grocery list, except that you don?t get to bring the list with you.

?What am I supposed to buy? ?Let?s see: milk, salad, ham, oatmeal, prunes (maybe I won?t get those)??. ?You?re trying to juggle a million different things in your mind at once.

What happens when you get home?

?Crap, I forgot the vanilla wafers!?

The same concept applies to tip memorization during speeches. ?How do you think you?re going to be able to juggle a million different tips in your mind at once?

You can?t.

But through practice, you convert an idea into a habit. ?

So let?s talk about that now.

What is the Public Speaking Mindset? ?

The Public Speaking Mindset

1. Understand your purpose and your value-added.

Before you say ?duh, I need to know what I?m giving my speech on?, read the rest of what I have to say here.

Your purpose is more than your topic. ? Understanding your purpose is the bedrock?and guiding light?for forming a presentation that is relevant, engaging and inspiring. ?Think about it:

- How many times have you listened to a speech where the speaker rambled on, and it was unclear what his main point was?

-How about presentation slides? ?Ever seen any with way too much writing?

Before you even start writing your speech, you should ask yourself, ?Of all of the things I could say about my topic, which are value-added??. ?Then, only?talk about those things that are value-added.

A perfect example:

In my Masters of Taxation program, everyone in the class was required to give a presentation about a complicated tax issue. ?How do you think most of my classmates gave them?

-They would repeat each and every fact about the case (often a 10 page court case).

-They would cover almost every facet of a large Internal Revenue Code section or regulation.

-They would give an extensive analysis with each line being something like this: ??According to Treas. Reg. ? 1.213-1(e)(1)(v), the cost of an in-patient hospital care is an expenditure for medical care, however for the institutions other than a hospital, the qualifications depend on the condition of the individual and the nature of the services he receives.?

Imagine having to listen to these presentations. ?The thing I realized from sitting through 40 of these is just how bad a speech is if the presenter isn?t focused on staying on point and conveying only value-added information.

It?s important for the speaker to know what aspects?of his or her topic to actually discuss!

The best way to do this: think first about your conclusion.

A lesson I learned long ago when I volunteered for some local political campaigns?:

The most people are going to remember about your speech is 2 or 3 things. ?So when you?re preparing your presentation, think to yourself- ?what are the 3 most important things I want my audience to remember? ?Focus your entire presentation around those 3 things?.

So- what is your bottom line? ?What is your conclusion? ?Whatever your ultimate point or punchline is: that?s what you should focus every word?of your speech on. ?Eliminate those words which add no value.

Think of the excerpt above that cites the Treasury Regulation. ?When you think about it, the actual value added here is knowing that care at a hospital will always count as a medical expense, but it will depend if it?s at something other than a hospital. ?The regulation citation and the faux-professional $10 words add nothing to the sentence?s basic meaning: it only adds complication.

So the next question naturally flows: how do I know what my conclusion?should be?

2. Understand your audience?s disposition.

-What does your audience already know?

-What do they want?to know?

-What kind of attention span do they have?

Way too many speeches I?ve heard simply exist for their own sake. ?The speaker just wants to?or has been forced to?talk about something random. ?And so they do just that; talk about whatever they want with minimal consideration to the audience.

But the real question is: ?what does your audience want??

3. You are an entertainer in addition to the main purpose of your speech.

I?m pretty sure I can, instead of listening to your speech:

a.) Go read a blog article

b.) Go read a Wikipedia article

c.) Go read a joke book,

and get the same content and ideas that I could from your speech.

But I?m taking time out of my day to listen to you.? Are you going to make it worth my while?

All of the aforementioned formats can convey the same content that your speech does. ?But can they convey the same feeling and emotion that your speech does?

I don?t necessarily mean ?be funny?; I mean ?be entertaining?.

I don?t need to spend much time here, because it?s easy to prove this point. ?Just think of any speech you?ve listened to. ?Have you ever enjoyed listening to a boring speech, even if the words spoken were informative and enlightening? ?Of course not. ?If you?re like me, your attention starts to wane after about 45 seconds, and you?re on facebook within a minute fifteen.

I will hit this in more detail in Parts 2 and 3 of this series, on speeches and presentation materials.

4. Learn to speak through osmosis.

Osmosis is the process of absorption; the process of absorbing cues and stimuli in your environment, and making them a part of you and your habits.

Great speakers learn to speak through osmosis. ?Excellent students of rhetoric don?t just think about it or read about it: they watch other great speakers, and they take note of what they do. ?How do they stand? ?How do they use their hands? ?What kind of tone inflections do they use?

If you want to give a funny speech, why not watch stand-up comedy? ?If you want to give a political and authoritative speech, go watch Ronald Reagan?s inauguration speech. ?If you want to learn how to tell stories to deliver points, watch Steve Jobs? 2005 Commencement Address.

Why reinvent the wheel? ?What makes sense to me is to watch the greats already at work, and to learn from them.

It?s like giving someone advice on how to dress. ?What is easier: trying to use words to explain proper suit combinations? ?Or showing people the combinations while being worn?

Final Thoughts (for this article).

I?ve given you a lot to think about here. ?And that?s okay. ?I think this will leave you well prepared for the upcoming articles on speeches and presentation materials.

In Parts 2 and 3, I will relate the concepts and action-points presented there directly back to the mindset outlined here. ?I want you to see how abstract concepts like the ones presented here make a huge difference when applied to a particular speech.

Remember: mindset is most important.? When you?re up there speaking, there?s no starting over; there?s no rewind; there?s no list of pointers to keep you on the right track. ?There?s only you. ?And with the right mindset, all of the ?tips? don?t matter: you will automatically articulate your points well, and have your audience thoroughly engaged.

Preventing blindness from age-related macular degeneration: a new ...

Even if it affects only 1 in 10,000 people, Stargardt disease is the most common form of macular degeneration associated with the legacy and is caused by mutations in a gene responsible for vitamin A treatment. Altered vitamin A in the treatment leads to the acceleration due to Stargardt vitamin A dimer formation and accumulation of lipofuscin and subsequently the early onset of visual symptoms, leading to blindness in almost every case. There is currently no treatment for Stargardt?s disease. The concentrations of these dimers are higher in the eyes of the elderly and those with certain inherited eye diseases. Vitamin A dimers are also insoluble pigment granules called lipofuscin. But in genetic diseases such as Stargardt?s disease, this process can occur very quickly, resulting in loss of vision in the beginning as young as 8.

Slow aggregation or ?clumping? of vitamin A in the eye may help prevent vision loss caused by macular degeneration, research from Columbia University Medical Center found.

In animal studies, the laboratory of Dr. Washington has made the synthesis of vitamin A modification of drug hydrogen isotope deuterium rather than integration protonium in selected locations. Dr. Washington and his lab hypothesized that these changes would make the bond involved in dimerization harder to break, which could slow dimerization. Powering the new drug vitamin healthy mice, were able to reduce the amount of vitamin A dimers without any observed side effects, said Dr. Washington, Assistant Professor Michael Jaharis for Ophthalmic Sciences at Columbia

?Of course cancer is often long and devastating and, despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, many more succumbing to cancer,? said Stephen Albert Johnston, director of the Biodesign Institute at ASU Center for innovations in medicine and host of the conference. ?We try to encourage the community to radically rethink our approach to cancer problem. The purpose of this meeting is to have scientists and doctors to reflect on how it could grow all our advances in technology and knowledge base by making a vaccine would be given to all adults to prevent the occurrence of cancer. ?

When administered to mice with the same genetic defect in human beings suffering from Stargardt?s disease, which usually cause the loss of vision at the beginning, modified vitamin A has resulted in less than vitamin A dimers, eye health better and improved vision. Important, also noted that vitamin A changed behaved exactly like vitamin A normal. Done in all other aspects, which makes it attractive potential of a therapy to prevent blindness in humans

Rather than changing the way the eye processes vitamin A, a team of researchers led by Ilyas Washington, a professor in the department of ophthalmology at the Harkness Eye Institute Columbia, has decided to focus on changing the structure of vitamin A itself. In turn, Dr. Washington and his lab have taken a new step towards the treatment of age-related macular degeneration , a leading cause of irreversible blindness ? and Stargardt?s disease, the most common cause of juvenile macular degeneration.

Dry-AMD affects about 10 million Americans and is the leading cause of blindness in the Western world. Among these, approximately 3 million Americans are at high risk of irreversible visual loss, and a million of them are severely visually impaired due to a late form of AMD-dry.

There is currently no treatment for dry-AMD.
