Friend Requests from Orphans in Africa

No one can deny that the advent of Facebook allowed us to re-connect with people whom we had all but forgotten about or just assumed we would never talk to again given the various chasms, in addition to latitude and longitude, that keep it difficult to maintain an open line of communication between two people. I still remember the day I received a friend request from my 2nd grade best friend whom I hadn?t spoken with in 12 years after moving from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Nashville, Tennessee prior to starting 3rd grade. But of the 1,356 friends I have on Facebook, there is one request that stands out above the rest.

In the summer of 2008, I spent a month working at an orphanage that was a short boat ride across Lake Victoria from the small town of Entebbe, Uganda.?The orphanage consisted of twelve 3 room homes that housed 10-12 kids each. Each home had a concrete block foundation with interior and exterior walls that were made from mud bricks that were formed and dried on the?property? There was no running water and the only source of electricity was a 60 watt bulb in the ?living room? of each home that was powered by a small solar panel on the roof. The twelve homes shared three outhouse style bathrooms. The shower water was held in a giant cast iron drum that was heated by a wood fire. The primitive plumbing was ineffective in mixing the cold and boiling hot water so you either took a a frigid shower or one that would literally melt your skin off.

During my month long stay, I developed relationships with many of the kids, some deeper than others. I grew especially close to 13 year old girl named Jackie (on the right in the picture below). I?m not sure why Jackie was drawn to me but she quickly opened up to me, told me about her past, how she arrived at the orphanage and the joys and difficulties of living in a three room home with 11 other kids of varying ages.

After my time at the orphanage was up, it was difficult leaving a group of kids who I had grown so close to in such a short period of time. I knew that I would most likely never see or hear from them again. It was difficult for the kids as well. My heart to this day has never been so broken as when I stepped on the boat to ride bike across Lake Victoria and tears started to fall down the kids? cheeks.

Rob & Kids

Four months after returning statside, I logged on to Facebook one night while taking a study break to find I had one pending friend request. At first glance of the small profile picture, I noticed it was a black female with a first and last name I didn?t recognize. Growing up in a very white suburb in the south and attending a university that lacked diversity to say the least, I had very few black friends; the majority of which I was already friends with on Facebook. I figured it was a spam account, but I clicked on the profile to give it a quick sanity check before promptly declining.

As soon as the profile view opened, my jaw dropped. I had just received a Facebook friend request from a 13-year-old African girl that lives in a remote African village that doesn?t have running water or?electricity. How in the world did she have access to a computer and an internet?connection? Even if she did, how does she know what Facebook is and how to use it?

For the past 5 years, Jackie and I have exchanged Facebook message every few months. She?s kept me up to date on her life as well as the other kids who I developed relationships with during my month long stay. Jacke is now 18 and will be soon be leaving the orphanage in hopes of attending college.

Facebook?s mission reads:

Our mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

Whether you believe Facebook?s stock is worth $300 or $3, you can?t deny they?re doing a pretty good job fulfilling their mission as a company.

NBA: Without Stephen Curry and two other starters, Golden State Warriors get road win against Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- It's hard to tell which should get most of the credit, the resilience and depth of the Warriors, or the noted ineptitude of the host Cavaliers. Either way, Golden State's 108-95 win Tuesday has a benchmark vibe.

The Warriors beat the Cavaliers despite not having three starters and a key reserve. No Andrew Bogut (left ankle). No Stephen Curry (right ankle). No Harrison Barnes (left knee). No Carl Landry (left shoulder).

As it turned out, the Warriors didn't need four of their top eight players.

"It was very easy to chalk one up and say we were short-handed," Warriors coach Mark Jackson. "We had every excuse to walk out of here with a loss. I challenged them, and they stepped up to the challenge."

Klay Thompson took advantage of the opportunity, lighting up Quicken Loans Arena for a career-high 32 points on 13-of-24 shooting. The Warriors got another good game from point guard Jarrett Jack, who totaled 26 points and 12 assists.

The Warriors defense took care of the rest. The Cavaliers were held to 42.9 percent shooting. Cleveland star guard Kyrie Irving, who was questionable with flu-like symptoms, managed just 14 points on 5-of-17 shooting.

The Warriors have lauded their depth and fight all season. Tuesday's win didn't have the drama of the road win over the Miami Heat, nor was it as eyebrow-raising as the win over Oklahoma City. But when looking for evidence that the Warriors are for real, that they are

game for a fight in this playoff quest, this game will stand out.

"Everybody stepped up," forward David Lee said after totaling 20 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. "Coach said it before the game that we could have chosen to mail this one in, last game of the road trip. Instead, we got a contribution from pretty much everyone who came into the game. ... We are all on the same page, and no matter who's out there, we're still going to play Warriors basketball."

Not that the Cavaliers were a worthy foe. Cleveland owns the third-worst record in the NBA and is also missing key players (big man Anderson Varejao and guard Daniel Gibson).

Still, it was a win the Warriors needed to have. Golden State salvaged a split of its four-game trip, which began with an ugly loss at Chicago and a tough defeat at Milwaukee.

"It's a big momentum swing going back home to Oakland," Thompson said. "We needed to come in here and get this win. We couldn't go 1-3 on this trip. We are a good road team, but even better at home."

The Warriors also stayed a half-game above Denver for the No. 5 seed in the West. Perhaps more important, Golden State inched closer to the All-Star break still in good position.

Certainly, the Warriors could use the rest for their banged-up roster.

The Warriors knew Bogut wasn't going to play. He returned to action Monday at Toronto after missing the previous 38 games and was scheduled to get the night off. He is still rehabilitating his surgically repaired left ankle and has been ruled out of playing back-to-back sets until at least after the All-Star break.

It was expected Curry would miss his third game this season after he sprained his problematic right ankle in the third quarter Monday, his second sprain in fewer than two weeks.

Barnes was a fairly surprising late scratch. He injured his left knee late in the Toronto game when he converted a one-handed tomahawk dunk.

Raptors center Aaron Gray, trying to contest the dunk, fouled Barnes in midair and prompted an awkward landing. The next morning, a Warriors official said, Barnes' left knee was sore.

Landry, who said he bruised his left shoulder taking a charge late in the game at Toronto, tried to give it a go Tuesday. But after warm-ups, he was ruled out.

As a result, Jackson had to go deep into his bench. And it produced.

It was the kind of collective effort that can rally a team. The undermanned Warriors handled business by playing together on both ends.

Rookie guard Kent Bazemore was the poster boy for how the end of the bench stepped up. He scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting with three assist and two rebounds. He also defended Irving straight up in the fourth quarter, preventing the All-Star guard from taking over the game late.

The Warriors took control near the end of the second quarter. With the score tied at 29, Thompson started a run with a 3-pointer. Jack later put Golden State up 39-32 with a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup. Moments later, a Bazemore 3-pointer pushed the lead to eight. Then Thompson punctuated a 17-5 run with a two-handed dunk. The Warriors led 55-44 at the half.

Thompson got hot in the third quarter to keep the Warriors comfortably ahead. He scored eight straight points, including two 3-pointers, the latter putting the Warriors up 72-57. Thompson made a career-high six 3-pointers.

The Warriors offense stalled a bit in the fourth quarter, allowing Cleveland to get within striking distance. The Cavaliers got as close as eight before Jack put the game away.

He nailed a pull-up 3-pointer at the 3:08 mark, giving the Warriors a 100-89 advantage. Then after a defensive stop, he dropped in a floater to put Golden State up 13.

That was all she wrote. The Warriors had pulled off the improbable. Or, just maybe, it was the Cavaliers who did. "They just kicked our butts," Irving said. "They jumped out to an early lead, and we just never got back in it."

Thursday's game

Dallas (19-26) at Warriors (28-17), 7:30 p.m. TNT

Try Commercial Real Estate Investing With These Simple Tips ...

TIP! Consider using the principals of feng shui in the interior design of your commercial investment properties. Opening spaces and clearing clutter are both two major attractions from those presets that appeal to buyers.

Select pieces of real estate can have tremendous commercial potential. This real estate can line your pockets with profit and might even make you rich! It can be risky, though, since it requires a significant investment.

TIP! Interview your prospective real estate broker to determine what they view as failures and successes, to see if their standards match yours. Also be sure to ask their method of measuring results.

Interest rates fluctuating is a major threat to commercial property investors. The current economic conditions will make interest rates go up and down without being predictable; this can be a disaster for a investor. Keep this in mind when shopping for property, and consider the long-term options.

TIP! Get your commercial property inspected before you try to sell it. You can fix any problems right away so you have the best available property.

Before you present a lender with an application so you can buy a commercial property, get your own financial information well-organized. If you don?t have these, banks won?t know how you manage your money, which might cause them not to lend the amount of money that you need.

TIP! Take into consideration the local unemployment levels, average income, and job market before investing in real estate. Homes that are located near schools, hospitals and other major employers are assigned a higher resale value.

Whether you want to get into real estate or you?ve been into it for a while, visit some websites that will help you find out how to invest in commercial real estate. You can never know too much when it comes to commercial real estate, so never stop looking for ways to obtain more information!

TIP! Commercial real estate agents come in different types. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords.

Before settling on a broker, determine if they negotiate aggressively or rationally. Ask them about their background, such as what training they?ve completed or experience they have. When choosing a real estate broker, make sure that they are ethical when doing business. Ask for examples of successful and unsuccessful past negotiations.

TIP! One of the biggest considerations in the process of attaining commercial property is to know the neighborhood of each and every prospective location. Expensive, luxury-oriented businesses will thrive in more affluent neighborhoods.

Once you have narrowed your choices down to two major contenders, you should expand your decision to include the big picture. The difficulty in securing financing doesn?t increase linearly with the size of the building you are buying. Generally, it?s like buying in bulk. As the number of units purchased goes up, the cost per until will go down.

TIP! Before formally making an offer, you must first locate a suitable lender. Local investors and small business owners are often willing to point you in the right direction for reputable lenders.

There is a considerable amount of money to be made in commercial real estate. Approach this activity as an investment of your money, but also of your time and hard work. To achieve this, you should look for opportunities to try out everything that you have just read.

Ticketmaster makes online 'CAPTCHA' puzzles easier

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Ticketmaster, often the target of fan anger when tickets to popular concerts get sold out in seconds, is removing an annoyance that can slow down the buying process: the jumble of letters that people need to decipher known as "CAPTCHA."

The puzzles provided by Google Inc. are meant to deter automated systems known as "bots" from purchasing large numbers of tickets the instant they go on sale. Scalpers have been known to employ bots to acquire tickets, which they resell for a profit.

CAPTCHA, an acronym that stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart," was developed by Carnegie Mellon computer scientists in 2000. Google bought the company that spun off from the university in 2009 in part to help it digitize books.

Since only humans, not computers, can decipher CAPTCHA codes, websites install the systems to keep tickets out of the hands of large-scale scalpers. In the fight against more sophisticated bot operators, CAPTCHA codes have become increasingly more difficult ? so difficult that the puzzles started slowing down flesh-and-blood fans.

Take a recent CAPTCHA puzzle, which looks like a bunch of distorted letters that is meant for a buyer to interpret and type: "dsrific LCDAppr." Because of the way the letters are bent out of shape on screen, it's tough even for humans to tell if the two instances of the letter "p'' are capitalized or not.

Ticketmaster is overhauling its website to provide easier puzzles. It has run trials online, and in the next several weeks, it will replace all its online puzzles provided by Google with easier ones provided by a New York-based startup called Solve Media. On mobile devices, Ticketmaster is eliminating the need for puzzles entirely, using its own technology that verifies the user through a "push" notification to the device.

Fans using the website will now see common phrases, such as "freezing temperatures," or multiple choice questions such as "which one is a country?" followed by a drop-down menu of answers including "monster truck," ''puppy" and "Spain."

The key is that Solve Media looks for certain digital clues ? which it won't divulge ? to determine if the ticket-buyer is a person or a bot. The technology will dole out an easy puzzle to a person. It will give a bot a difficult one.

That has already made the fan experience better, says Kip Levin, Ticketmaster's executive vice president of eCommerce. The average time it takes to solve these puzzles has been halved from about 14 seconds to about 7 seconds, the company said.

"Anecdotally, we're starting to see an uptick in fan satisfaction," Levin said. "We're happy with what we've seen from a security standpoint as well."

Some puzzles are in the form of ads. A puzzle sponsored by Southwest Airlines Co. makes buyers enter the words "Bags Fly Free." One by TurboTax requires buyers to type "File Free."

Ari Jacoby, the CEO and cofounder of Solve Media, called advertising the "third leg of the stool" for his business after improving user experience and security. Because the sponsored puzzles use company slogans or product names as answers, they are "highly effective and memorable," Jacoby said.

Solve Media has more than 6,000 customers including magazine publisher Meredith Corp. and online portal AOL Inc., which is also an investor. Advertisers have included a range of major brands such as McDonald's, Toyota, CBS and Pizza Hut.

In February, Solve Media expects to serve up 200 million puzzles. Adding Ticketmaster will boost the number of possible ads it can send out. In 2011, Ticketmaster parent Live Nation Entertainment Inc. sold 141 million tickets, although it's unclear how many were purchased online.

Execution of woman in Texas postponed, lawyers to argue jury discrimination

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - The execution of Kimberly McCarthy was postponed by a Texas judge on Tuesday, the day she was to die, to give her lawyers time to argue that racial discrimination played a role in choosing the jury that convicted her.

It was rescheduled for April 3 and, if carried out, McCarthy will be the first woman to be put to death in the United States in nearly three years.

Dallas County District Court Judge Larry Mitchell delayed the execution, which was scheduled to take place after 6 p.m. local time.

"Of the twelve jurors seated at trial, all were white, except one, and eligible non-white jurors were excluded from serving by the State," said Maurie Levin, a University of Texas adjunct law professor who assisted in representing McCarthy.

McCarthy is African-American.

The predominantly white jury contrasted with an African-American population in Dallas County of 22.5 percent, lawyers said in their request for the delay of execution.

Dallas County, Texas, has previously been accused of racial discrimination in jury selection. In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a black death row inmate convicted in the county was entitled to a new trial because of strong evidence of racial bias in jury selection during his 1986 trial.

"Race played an undeniable role in the selection of the jury that convicted and sentenced Ms. McCarthy," her lawyers said in their request.

Women are rarely executed in the United States. Only 12 female inmates have been put to death since capital punishment was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

The last woman executed was Teresa Lewis in Virginia on September 23, 2010, the center said.

McCarthy, 51, was convicted of stabbing her 71-year-old neighbor Dorothy Booth on July 21, 1997.

According to the Texas attorney general's summary of the case she also cut off Booth's left ring finger to take her diamond ring, which she later pawned.

McCarthy also was believed to be responsible for the murders of two other elderly women, according to the case summary.

McCarthy was found guilty in 1998 by a Dallas County jury of murdering Booth and she was sentenced to death. Her conviction was overturned by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2001 because no attorney was present when she was questioned after the crime, even though she had requested a lawyer, court documents showed. She was tried a second time in 2002, found guilty by a Dallas County jury, and again sentenced to death.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2004 agreed with the second conviction.

McCarthy would have been the second person executed in the United States so far this year. Forty-three inmates were put to death in 2012.

(AP Photo/Microsoft)

(AP) ? Microsoft is aiming its redesigned Office software at the growing number of people who expect their favorite applications to be at their fingertips, wherever there's an Internet connection.

In an attempt to extend a lucrative franchise beyond personal computers, the world's biggest software maker is selling a retooled version of Office as an online subscription service to consumers for the first time. It's a departure from Microsoft's traditional approach of granting permission to install Office on solitary machines for a one-time fee.

Tuesday's release comes six months after Microsoft previewed the new-look Office, which includes popular word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.

"This is a fundamental shift in our business that began a several years ago," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer wrote in a blog post.

The revamped Office boasts touch controls, just like the redesigned version of the Windows operating system that Microsoft Corp. released three months ago. The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is trying to ensure that its products retain their appeal at a time when people increasingly rely on mobile devices instead of personal computers.

To tap into that trend, Microsoft is promoting Office 2013 as a program tailored for use over the Internet. All information is automatically stored in Microsoft's data centers, allowing for access to the same material on multiple devices. The content also can be stored on the hard drives of devices.

But Microsoft still isn't trying to get Office on the largest number of devices possible. Office 2013 doesn't include an option that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad or smartphones and tablet computers running the Android software made by Google Inc. That leaves out the majority of smartphones and tablets sold in the past two years.

Microsoft is offering Office 2013 in a $100 annual subscription package, called 365 Home Premium, which includes online access on up to five Windows devices or Apple's Mac computers.

The company believes Office 2013 is currently best suited for Windows devices, said Chris Schneider, Microsoft's senior public relations manager for Office. Microsoft is limiting Office's reach as it tries to grab a bigger piece of the mobile market with its own operating system for smartphones and tablets.

Office will still be sold under a one-time licensing fee that allows the software to be installed on a single machine. Prices for that option start at $140 and range up to $400. People who don't need the entire Office bundle can buy individual programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook for $109 apiece. Microsoft outlines its pricing options in its online store, http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/ .

Office 2013 is the first overhaul of the software suite in three years.

The bundle of programs has become a staple on desktop and laptop computers, providing a rich vein of revenue for Microsoft.

The Microsoft division anchored by Office generates about $24 billion in annual sales, accounting for nearly one-third of the company's total revenue.

Revenue in the Office division fell from the previous year during the three months ending in December, partly because many prospective buyers have been awaiting the latest version.

Microsoft's stock gained 14 cents to $28.05 in Tuesday's late afternoon trading. The shares are up by less than 1 percent since Microsoft released Windows 8 to great fanfare three months ago. Meanwhile, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed by about 7 percent.

Besides getting access to the suite's programs, 365 Home Premium subscribers receive 20 additional gigabytes of storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive to supplement the 7 gigabytes that the company gives away to accountholders for free. Subscribers also will get 60 minutes of free international calls on Microsoft's Skype service for Internet phone calls and video chats.

College students and teachers will be able to buy Office 2013's online product for $80 for four years, which works out to about $1.67 per month. This option requires proof of student status. A variety of Office subscriptions are also being offered, with monthly fees ranging from $6 to $20 per user. More information can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/compare-plans.aspx .

The online push reflects Microsoft's recognition that people want access to documents and email on whatever Internet-connected device they might have, wherever they may be, whether it's at work, home or a store while running errands.

"The technology needs to be able to move with you," Schneider said.

It's the first time that Microsoft has tried to persuade consumers that a recurring online subscription is the best way to buy and use Office. Microsoft had previously sold online Office subscriptions primarily to small businesses.

"Over time, the majority of the billion plus people using Office will be using the Office 365 service," Ballmer predicted in his blog post.

The attempt to sell online Office subscription to consumers comes nearly seven years after Google unveiled its own Internet bundle of word processing, spreadsheet and email programs. Google gives away a basic version of those applications, and charges subscriptions for more sophisticated packages aimed primarily at small businesses.

Microsoft's decision to reshape Office into an online service makes sense, although it may take customers a while to embrace the concept, said Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson. He suspects major companies that rely on Office probably will be among the last users to make the switch.

"This is a good innovation, but the uptake may be slow to begin because it is so different," Olson said.

Cows fed flaxseed produce more nutritious dairy products

Monday, January 28, 2013

Dairy cows that are fed flaxseed produce more nutritious milk, according to a new study by Oregon State University.

Their milk contained more omega-3 fatty acids and less saturated fat, the study found.

Diets high in saturated fat can increase cholesterol and cause heart disease, while those rich in omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart disease, studies have shown.

Traditional cattle feed mixtures of corn, grains, alfalfa hay and grass silage result in dairy products with low concentrations of omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fats, according to Gerd Bobe, the lead scientist on the study, which has been published online in the Journal of Dairy Science.

Ten pregnant cows at OSU's dairy were fed different amounts of flaxseed ? up to seven percent of their daily diet. Researchers attempted to pinpoint the amount of flaxseed that would maximize the amount of omega-3 in milk and dairy products without negatively affecting their production and texture.

"We were looking for a sweet spot," said Bobe, an expert in human and animal nutrition. "Too much of a good thing can be bad, especially when trying to maintain consistency with dairy products."

Collaborators in OSU's food science and technology department assisted in turning milk into butter and fresh cheese, which were then tested for texture and nutritional composition.

The study found that feeding cows up to six pounds of extruded flaxseed improved the fat profile without negatively affecting the production and texture of the milk and other dairy products. Extrusion presses raw ground flaxseed into pellets with heat.

At six pounds per day, saturated fatty acids in whole milk fat dropped 18 percent, poly-unsaturated fatty acids increased 82 percent, and omega-3 levels rose 70 percent compared to feeding no flaxseed.

Similar improvements were observed in butter and cheese.

Still, saturated fat accounted for more than half of the fatty acids in the dairy products while the increase in polyunsaturated fats compromised no more than nearly nine percent of the total.

Researchers also noted that the refrigerated butter was softer and less adhesive thanks to fewer saturated fatty acids. Also, the cows produced the same amount of milk while eating flaxseed.

Although flaxseed costs more than traditional cattle feeds, Bobe hopes that it still could be an affordable feed supplement for cows because products enriched with omega-3 can sell for a premium at the grocery store.

"Many consumers already show a willingness to pay extra for value-added foods, like omega-3 enriched milk," he said.

One thing is for sure, he said: Dairy farmers will have no trouble convincing cows to eat flaxseed. "They loved it. They ate it like candy," he said.

(AP) ? A genetic variant commonly found in Chinese people may help explain why some got seriously ill with swine flu, a discovery scientists say could help pinpoint why flu viruses hit some populations particularly hard and change how they are treated.

Less than one percent of Caucasians are thought to have the gene alteration, which has previously been linked to severe influenza. Yet about 25 percent of Chinese people have the gene variant, which is also common in Japanese and Korean people.

British and Chinese researchers analyzed 83 patients admitted to a Beijing hospital during the 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic. Of those with serious complications like pneumonia, respiratory or kidney failure, 69 percent had the genetic alteration. Among patients with mild illness, only 25 percent did.

"It doesn't mean you should panic if you have this gene variant," said Andrew McMichael, director of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University, one of the study's authors. "Most people who have it won't run into any trouble at all."

He suggested people with this genetic predisposition to severe flu should be treated earlier and more aggressively than others.

McMichael estimated that people with the genetic variant were five to six times more likely to get severely ill once they're infected. The gene alteration doesn't make people more likely to catch the flu, since that depends on other factors like environmental exposure and previous immunity.

McMichael said the gene variant might give people the same susceptibility to get severely ill from other ailments including dengue, SARS and other flus. But it could also provide them with better immunity if they recover.

The research was published online Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

Some experts said it was an intriguing finding that shows a patient's response to a virus may determine how sick they will become.

"The bug in someone who gets severely ill is not any different than the one that infects someone who has mild illness," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, who did not participate in the study. "It's the host that does all the damage to themselves."

If people carried the genetic variant, Osterholm said, their immune systems were more likely to kick into overdrive if they caught the flu, causing problems like organ damage or blocking their airways.

Scientists have long recognized that diseases don't strike all populations equally. Caucasian people are more likely to get the crippling Guillain-Barre syndrome after vaccinations and flu epidemics are often more fatal in indigenous populations in Australia and Canada. Records are too limited to know if previous flu outbreaks have been more lethal in Asia.

Osterholm warned that the genetic variant wasn't limited to people of Chinese descent. "A lot of other populations have the same genes that respond immunologically like this," he said.

Osterholm thought that different flu strains would likely trigger different responses in people and just because Chinese people may have been more vulnerable to severe disease with swine flu doesn't mean they would have the same reaction with other flus.

Others said genetic screening might one day be included in national flu plans.

"Further work needs to be done to justify that, but maybe in the future we would be able to say that if you're of a certain ethnicity, you are more at risk and should be prioritized for vaccination or antivirals," said Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial College London. "It's possible we could one day do a genetic test before treating someone with flu to see what the best treatment would be."

Miss. River remains closed after barge accident

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) ? The Coast Guard says nearly four dozen vessels are stacked up on the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, awaiting clearance as crews work around the clock to clean up an oil spill.

Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan Lally told The Associated Press early Tuesday workers are skimming oily water since a barge holding 80,000 gallons of oil struck a railroad bridge and began leaking Sunday.

Lally says oil was being contained and a helicopter crew found no evidence it washed ashore downriver. Boom was stretched across part of the river as oil was pumped from a ruptured tank into another tank on the barge. Officials hope to later transfer the oil to another barge.

The river remained closed to traffic for 16 miles Tuesday, with 47 vessels waiting for it to reopen.

>>> new information is coming to light in the jonbenet ramsey case, more than six years after her death. in 1999 , the district attorney announced there wasn't sufficient evidence to file charges against anyone. evidently a grand jury had a different opinion. erica hill is here with the story.

>> good morning to you, matt. a grand jury voted to indict john and patsy ramsey , jonbenet 's parents. nbc news spoke to them that they remain anonymous.

>> a little girl 's body was found in the basement.

>> reporter: john and patsy ramsey pleaded to find their daughter's killer. they even offered a reward. yet from the beginning investigators focused on jonbenet 's parents.

>> they do remain under an umbrella of suspicion.

>> reporter: the 6-year-old beauty queen 's parents were never charged in connection with their daughter's death and strongly deny any suggestion they were somehow involved.

>> i did not kill my daughter, jonbenet .

>> i did not have anything to do with it.

>> reporter: in september 1998 , the case was brought to a boulder grand jury . more than a year later on the day they concluded, alex hunter, then boulder d.a., addressed the public.

>> i and my prosecution task force believe we do not have sufficient evidence to warrant the filing of charges.

>> reporter: now more than 13 years later, we're learning the grand jury didn't agree. according to the boulder daily camera , which spoke with members of the grand jury on condition of anonymity, they voted to indict both ramseys on charges of child abuse that resulted in the death of jonbenet .

>> we don't see this scenario, grand juries wanted to indict and prosecutors saying no.

>> reporter: confirms the grand jury voted to indict the ramseys. he believes hunter's decision not to prosecute was courageous.

>> there just simply was a lack of evidence.

>> reporter: one juror, who spoke with the daily camera told the paper, quote, we didn't know who did what, but we felt the adults in the house may have done something, or they certainly could have prevented or helped her and they didn't. in a 2001 interview, hunter told nbc he had no regrets about his decisions in the case.

>> i have enough people that i respect that have said to me, you know, you made a tough call. you made a call that the public didn't like, but you were true to the law. you were a good prosecutor. and that's plenty for me.

>> in a statement, john ramsey 's attorney told nbc the dna tests performed after the time of the boulder grand jury not only prove the ramseys to be innocent and the grand jury wrong they also make d.a. alex hunter a hero who wisely avoided a miscarriage of justice.

>> this is going to open up a whole new round of conversations.

>> yes.

By popular demand, Sony releases Jelly Bean alpha build for Xperia T

Because the first time proved to be such a charm for Android developers, Sony's once again offering Xperia owners an official alpha ROM. And this time, it's of the Jelly Bean variety. But before you rush to the source and flash your cares away, there are a few caveats we need to cover. For starters, the price of entry to this Android 4.1 test run is an unlocked Xperia T. Not the TX, not the V, not the S, so don't even try it. You'll also have to sign away your legal right (via the company's unlock utility) to whine and demand compensation should your handset brick in the process. Once those hurdles have been cleared, you're almost home free to flash -- so long as you don't mind an unfinished UI, non-functioning radios for voice, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, in addition to a complete lack of Gapps. Oh, and did we mention your unlocked T won't be privy to the official Jelly Bean update once it hits? Yeah, there's that too. Basically, you shouldn't look to this for a daily driver. In fact, it's probably best to leave this one to the big boys.

Wall Street climbs at open on earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock futures climbed on Friday and the S&P 500 was poised for an eighth day of gains, its longest winning streak in eight years, buoyed by rosy earnings from Procter & Gamble amid a backdrop of sturdy corporate results.

The equity market was also boosted by agreement in Washington to extend the government's borrowing power through mid-May, encouraging signs of recovery in the global economy, solid corporate earnings, and seasonal inflows into stocks.

Those factors helped the S&P 500 rally for a seventh day on Thursday to a five-year peak. Still, the index struggled to climb convincingly above 1,500, a level it surpassed briefly Thursday for the first time since December 2007.

"We are seeing a very broad-based rally and the ingredients are still in place" for gains to continue, said Steve Goldman, principal at Goldman Management in Short Hills, New Jersey. "This is the lift-off phase and it's still significant."

Procter & Gamble , the world's top household products maker, said quarterly profit soared past expectations and raised its sales and earnings outlook for the fiscal year. Shares were up 2.1 pct at $71.88 in premarket trading.

S&P 500 futures rose 3.6 point and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 32 points and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 9.75 points.

If the S&P 500 rises for an eighth day, it will be its longest winning streak since late 2004, when it enjoyed a nine-day run.

Pointing to a rotation out of bonds, U.S. 30-year Treasury bonds traded more than a point lower in price on Friday, with yields touching session highs at 3.10 percent.

"You have had more confidence from fund managers to provide more allocations to equity markets," which looked more attractive than bonds or cash, said Rick Meckler, president of investment firm LibertyView Capital Management.

Recent company earnings have been encouraging. Thomson Reuters data through early Thursday showed that of the 133 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far, 66.9 percent exceeded expectations, more than the 65 percent average over the past four quarters.

Microsoft Corp reported lower quarterly profit on Thursday as Office software sales slowed ahead of a new launch, offsetting a solid but unspectacular start for its Windows 8 operating system and sending the company's shares down 0.8 percent in premarket trading.

Apple stepped up audits of working conditions at major suppliers last year, discovering multiple cases of underage workers, discrimination and wage problems. The shares, which fell 12 percent Thursday after disappointing earnings, edged up 0.5 percent to $452.90.

German business morale improved for a third consecutive month in January to its highest in more than half a year, providing further evidence that growth in Europe's largest economy was gathering speed after contracting late last year.

Echoing a more positive tone in Europe, ECB President Mario Draghi said on Friday he expects the euro zone economy to recover later this year, and that financial market improvements had not yet trickled into the general economy.

Leading international experts gather today at the FLAVIOLA International Workshop on Flavanols in Cardiovascular Health in Brussels, Belgium

Brussels, Belgium (January 24, 2013) --- Over 50 leading experts will meet today in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss recent breakthroughs in the field of cocoa flavanol research and the key findings of FLAVIOLA an EU-funded consortium dedicated to state-of-the-art research into flavanols, their health benefits and potential applications. Members of the FLAVIOLA consortium will be joined by a number of international researchers to review the outcomes of FLAVIOLA's research and their potential implications on cocoa flavanol-based applications and potential dietary recommendations for flavanol intake.

The workshop, entitled FLAVIOLA International Workshop on Flavanols in Cardiovascular Health, will feature presentations on the project outcomes and wider scientific implications, and will conclude with a panel discussion by leading international scientific and medical experts. Workshop proceedings will be developed following the meeting in order to publically communicate the collective views of the FLAVIOLA consortium and experts in the field.

"We now have a strong understanding of flavanols' cardiovascular and circulatory health benefits and the past few years have seen a number of significant research advances many of which have been driven by FLAVIOLA scientists," commented Professor Malte Kelm, FLAVIOLA Scientific Director and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Pulmonary Diseases, Vascular Medicine, and Intensive Care Medicine at Heinrich-Heine University, Dsseldorf. "This multidisciplinary research has focused on linking the chemistry of flavanols with their benefits for human health and has deeply improved our understanding of the function, delivery and potential health applications of these unique and fascinating compounds."

FLAVIOLA leverages the latest innovations in chemistry, cardiovascular function analysis, food processing technology, and analytics to drive forward investigations into the biological action of flavanols and apply this knowledge in the development of evidence-based dietary recommendations and innovative products. Specifically, FLAVIOLA focuses on providing new insights in four key areas - the analysis of flavanols, flavanol consumption, the impact of flavanols in healthy people, and the potential mechanisms of action of flavanols.

Recent research by FLAVIOLA scientists has shed new light on the types and amounts of flavanols in cocoa, as well as the impact of food processing and manufacturing on the flavanol content of certain food products. New findings have also advanced understanding of what happens to flavanols in the human body following consumption, and provided insights into the mechanisms of action that underlie the biological effects of this phytonutrient. FLAVIOLA researchers have also compiled a comprehensive database of the amounts and types of flavanols consumed in 14 countries across the European Union. This will enable better interpretation of dietary intervention studies and clearer associations between flavanol consumption and health and disease.

"By advancing our knowledge of the health benefits, function and delivery of flavanols, FLAVIOLA has the potential to have a far-reaching impact on public health," said Professor Marc Merx, FLAVIOLA Coordinator and Professor at the Department of Cardiology, Pulmonary Diseases, Vascular Medicine, and Intensive Care Medicine, Heinrich-Heine University, Dsseldorf. "The breadth and quality of the research undertaken by FLAVIOLA would not have been possible without the diverse partners from across Europe that were brought together for this project."

###

Funded under the seventh framework programme of the European Commission, FLAVIOLA brings together the expertise and unique skill set of food scientists, nutritionists, biochemists, molecular biologists, cardiovascular physicians, and epidemiologists. The multidisciplinary team involves researchers from eight partners from academia, industry and government organisations, including Heinrich-Heine University (Germany), Mars, Incorporated (Belgium), University of Reading (UK), Maastricht University (Netherlands), INRA French National Institute for Agricultural Research (France), Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Ghent University (Belgium) and SciProm (Switzerland).

About FLAVIOLA

FLAVIOLA is a pan-European research project, funded under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission. The project aims to provide crucial insights into the nutritional and biomedical properties of flavanols ranging from the cellular level to their impact on the population at large. FLAVIOLA's vision is that through collaborative and cutting-edge research, it will lay the foundation for the development of evidence-based dietary recommendations and innovative food products that harness the benefits of flavanols for cardiovascular health.

About flavanols

Flavanols are a group of naturally-occurring compounds found in cocoa beans, grapes, tea leaves and various fruits and vegetables. A significant body of published research has shown that consumption of flavanols can improve the performance of the circulatory system and may help support cardiovascular health. The FLAVIOLA project is committed to using the latest techniques to further understand these benefits and explore the biological action of flavanols at the organism, organ, cellular and sub-cellular level.
