Have any suggestions for the 3 Count? Let me know via Twitter @plagiarismtoday. 1: Legislator Calls for Clarifying Copyright Law First off today, Representative John Conyers (D-MI) has called for clarification of termination rights to make it certain who is eligible for copyright termination. Copyright termination allows artists, after 35 years in the case of works created after 1978, to terminate exclusive licenses and copyright transfers they granted others, reclaiming the work. Many musicians are queuing up to file such terminations and the record labels are poised to battle those requests. Conyers, wishing to avoid years of expensive litigation, wants to preemptively clarify the law in favor of artists. Conyers is also the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, a critical committee for passing such legislation. 2: NM Courtroom Sketch Artist Sues AP, Getty Over Copyright Net up today, prominent courtroom artist Patricia Lopez has filed a suit against both the Associated Press and Getty Images claiming that they have violated her copyright by reselling and reproducing her work. Though she was paid for the images, according to Lopez, she retained copyright in her works and disapproved of their continued sale, prompting the lawsuit. Neither the AP nor Getty had any comment. 3: Is Copyright Only For the Big Guys? Finally today, Torrentfreak has an article featuring two recent cases in Britain, one with the BBC and one with the Daily Mail, where the news companies infringed copyrights of smaller creators, namely photographers whose images they wanted to use in stories, and largely escaped any punishment for it. According to Torrentfreak, this may be an indication that copyright is only for big corporations, the ones who can afford to protect it and has asked others to weigh in on the conversation. Suggestions That's it for the three count today. We will be back tomorrow with three more copyright links. If you have a link that you want to suggest a link for the column or have any proposals to make it better. Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. I hope to hear from you. Want the Full Story? Tune in every Wednesday evening at 5 PM ET for the live recording of the Copyright 2.0 Show or wait and get the edited version Friday right here on Plagiarism Today. Do you have a formal dining room? a beautiful antique table would show off your home with elegance. it could be a conservation piece at your family dinners or when you have special friends over for dinner. Maybe you just want a large, heavy old time table and not one of the everyday type that you would have to buy today. it can be very hard to find the right table for your home but an antique table might just suit your taste and go perfectly with every thing you have in your home.
You could run into difficulties in finding the right antique table if you have no idea where to look. Finding one in your local area is best because it will give you a chance to look it over before you consider on buying it. the ideal antique table is one that looks brand new but is an antique at least one hundred years old. we would find this almost impossible but we still want one that is sturdy, all joints intact, and in overall good condition. Abuse and wear will lower the value of antiques so check it over very carefully looking to see that there are no cracked or warped wood in the table. look on the underside of the table to see if there could be any information that would suggest that it is a reproduction. by looking underneath you could probably tell if it has been repaired.
Even though antique shops are usually higher priced than other outlets they are still a very good place to look for something special and also in better condition. try charity stores such as Goodwill and thrift stores, you might just find some thing that someone has turned in not knowing that it is a antique. You can try garage and estate sales but like the charity and thrift stores you will have to rely on your own judgment to determine if they are real antiques or not. if you find antique tables or any antiques at these places it is most likely to be a very good bargain. the internet can connect you with someone that is selling antique tables. Craigslist and eBay are two good places to start. You would have to look for places fairly close to your home because traveling hundreds or thousands of miles might not be practical.
If you are handy and like to repair things, you could look for antique tables that needs refinishing or repairing, then you can come up with some real bargains. I have seen tables that had a few coats of paint on them and when the paint was removed and the table sanded it uncovered the most beautiful wood that you have ever seen and that is a special treasure.

It has long been known that hereditary factors play a role in coronary heart disease. However, it has been unclear whether the increased risk is transferred through the genes or through an unhealthy lifestyle in the family. A new study from the Center for Primary Health Care Research in Sweden, published in the American Heart Journal, shows that genes appear to be most important.
The researchers, led by Professor Kristina Sundquist, studied people who had been adopted and compared them with both their biological and their adoptive parents. The Swedish multi-generation register and the in-patient care register were used to follow 80 214 adopted men and women. They were all born in 1932 or later and developed coronary heart disease between 1973 and 2008. Using the registers, the researchers also studied the adoptive parents and biological parents over the same period.
The risk of coronary heart disease in adopted individuals who had at least one biological parent with coronary heart disease was 40-60% higher than that of a control group. There was no increased risk in individuals whose adoptive parents suffered from coronary heart disease, not even if both adoptive parents had the disease.
"The results of our studies suggest that the risk of coronary heart disease is not transferred via an unhealthy lifestyle in the family, but rather via the genes," says Kristina Sundquist, a professor at the Center for Primary Health Care Research in Malm?, Sweden.
"But that does not mean that one's lifestyle is not a factor in one's own risk of developing coronary heart disease."

Recently I?ve found myself constantly craving Indian food, so I was a pretty happy bunny when my friend Charlotta suggested that we pay a visit to Covent Garden?s Masala Zone. Part of a chain and yet with its own unique decor and atmosphere, the Covent Garden branch of Masala Zone offers delicious food with a much higher degree of authenticity than your average Indian restaurant in London. I couldn?t wait to try it out.
On arrival at the restaurant, the first thing that caught my eye was the incredible ceiling. Masala Zone pride themselves on combining different forms of colourful Indian art with an otherwise simple and highly contemporary design. I am told that each restaurant has a different theme: so whilst diners in Camden experience an array of Indian fusion poster art and diners in Bayswater are treated to vibrant pop art collages, in Covent garden we sat below a breathtaking collection of colourful Rajasthani puppets. It was a while before I could take my eyes off them, and I could currently kick myself for not having taken some pictures. There are, however, a few images on the Masala Zone website that will give you an idea of how wonderful this display is ? you can have a look here.
Although the puppets were stunning, what we were really there for was the food (and a good old natter, of course). To my great delight, Masala Zone serves a range of different street foods, including my all time favourites: papri chaat and gol gappas. On this occasion we order a plate of papri chaat to share whilst we perused the main courses. It was full of flavour, fairly spicy and a good-sized portion ? plenty for two to snack on with drinks.
Main courses at Masala Zone come in the form of thalis. For those not familiar with thalis, they are large, round metal trays, on which are served a collection of small bowls, called katoris. Each katori contains a different part of the meal, from curry to daal, raita and pickle. Thalis are a wonderful way to ensure that you get to try plenty of dishes, and in my opinion are the best way to enjoy Indian cuisine.
Charlotta and I both ordered one of the smaller vegetarian thalis, as we knew that otherwise we?d be too full to do anything other than roll home. The waiter rather unhelpfully kept pushing the larger thali on us, but we stood our ground and after a while the two thalis arrived. We happily tucked in to vegetable curry, potatoes, daal, a vegetable side dish and bread. It was all pretty tasty, and afterwards there wasn?t a single katori that hadn?t been enthusiastically emptied.
On this occasion we felt too full to embark on dessert, but I was excited to see that there is an extensive menu of traditional Indian sweet dishes, from kulfis to rasmalai. As I usually judge a good Indian restaurant by whether or not they serve chaat and/or rasmalai, Masala Zone had racked up a fair number of brownie points at this stage.
I can?t remember exactly, but the full meal came to twenty-something pounds per head ? not bad considering that we also polished off a bottle of wine. I would thoroughly recommend Masala Zone as a great place to head for an enjoyable dinner that won?t break the bank. Seriously, it would be worth it just to see the puppets ? and the good food is certainly a very welcome bonus.

Post Published: 25 August 2011It looks like the banged-up Boston offense will soon get a boost.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Jacoby Ellsbury, who is out for a third straight game tonight, likely will return to center field on Tuesday.
The Boston Herald?s Scott Lauber also reports that David Ortiz will take batting practice and then have his heel examined to see if he permanently take the walking boot off his injured right foot.? He won?t return until Wednesday at the earliest and perhaps not until the weekend.
Finally, J.D. Drew, who last played July 20 before going on the DL with a left shoulder impingement, will begin his rehab assignment Friday with an eye towards a Sept. 1 return.
Unlike the other two, Drew won?t be welcomed back with an everyday job awaiting him.? However, with Josh Reddick slumping, Drew might be able to stake a claim to a piece of the right-field job if he impresses in the minors.? Reddick is hitting .226/.281/.358 with two homers and four RBI in 53 at-bats this month.
They may not be the most attractive creatures on Earth but there is no doubting their success.
Harvestmen, or Opiliones as scientists would call them, have existed for hundreds of millions of years.
What is fascinating about them is how little they have changed in that time.
This is confirmed by new research published in Nature Communications that has produced some exquisite 3D renderings of two fossil harvestmen from France.
The specimens are just over 300 million years old - from the Carboniferous Period.
Many of their features were buried in their host rocks and difficult to study.
So, Dr Russell Garwood, who is currently based at London's Natural History Museum, put the fossils in a computed tomography (CT) scanner.
This machine is able to generate three-dimensional models of objects from a series of two-dimensional X-ray images - more than 3,000 images in the case of these two specimens.
The result is a virtual extraction of the harvestmen and a fabulous means to study the creatures' anatomy.
Both arachnids are shown to belong to taxonomic groups that still exist today.
Ameticos scolos, from the sub-order Dyspnoi, displays two spine-like structures on its 9mm-long body - something that might have deterred any predator trying to swallow it.
The slightly smaller Macrogyion cronos, from the sub-order Eupnoi, is distinguished here by its long legs, one of which has a big curve. Modern relatives have a very similar appearance and use these looped structures to grab on to leaf parts as they move through foliage.
"We can't actually say scientifically why harvestmen have changed so little through Earth history, but basically everything else around on land at this time in the Carboniferous was in a very primitive form," explained Dr Garwood.
"These creatures, on the other hand, were pretty much as they appear now all the way back then. They are the exception in that sense," he told BBC News.
Being so slight and spindly, it is not really surprising that ancient harvestmen have a relatively poor record. Only around 33 fossilised species have been discovered so far, and for some of those the quality of preservation is not brilliant.
That makes the CT scanning technique all the more valuable, enabling scientists to capture every last detail - even of those anatomical aspects hidden inside the encapsulating rock.
The other key advantage, of course, is that scanning like this is non-destructive; the fossil does not need to be split open, which risks damaging the very features a researcher wants to see.
"With the Dyspnoi specimen, all I could see from the rock were the two spines sticking out - quite unprepossessing," recalls Dr Garwood. "With the other one, I could see a bit of the underside and then one nice long leg, and that was it."
Although currently based in the computed tomography lab at the NHM, Dr Garwood carried out his research while at Imperial College London.

If you?re living in a small one bedroom flat, and you could hardly squeeze your friends or kin whenever they feel like sleeping over, then the practical option is a sofa bed. Realistically speaking, a sofa bed is considered a piece of furniture offering space-saving functionality and efficient versatility in your living room. Surely you would want to have it added to your place.
With anticipated or even unexpected visit from family or friends, you can welcome them and have a bed to readily sleep in. The sofa bed can literally convert your living room into a provisional guest room. Not just for the living room, but a sofa bed is also pretty convenient to use in other rooms of the house, and even offices that one may want to alternately double as a bedroom.
One of the more basic integral features of a sofa bed is the mattress. Even with traditional or conventional beds, a good mattress on it means a well rested body after a night of regular sleeping. So if what is used in a sofa bed, is a mattress that conforms to the highest international standards, made of soft fabric and supported with stable coil springs, the resulting outcome is an indescribable feeling of luxury for yourself and family. An excellent mattress can not be gauged through its thickness or thinness but rather on the grade of its materials. To give more comfort to the sofa bed, add ons like mattress coverings and pads could be added.
To start off, if you plan to to purchase a sofa bed the key point to consider is that this will be chiefly put into service as a furniture for seating purposes and from time to time converted into bed. Be on the lookout for similar product features and advantages like that of a customary sofa. Choose one that will give more seating comfort, ease in maintenance and design that will add glamour to your house.
It is indeed a must to look out for these edges, as these may harm a person using the sofa bed. And in some instances blankets or sheets get stucked causing rip and tear to the material. To avoid regrets, ensure to have a closer examination of these drawbacks, and instead select one which is rough-edge free and thereby get the real value for your money.
Practically every household dwelling nowadays are constantly entertaining guests, visitors and family. As a consequence, in order to welcome them in the event that they had to sleep over, an extra sleeping bed just for them is quite necessary. Instead of your guests sleeping in a motel, hospitality dictates to offer your home.
To create an extra space, one needs an extra bed and that is where a sofa bed, also called a sofa sleeper, comes very handy to double as a conventional bed. It is not only at home that a sofa bed can be of great use. Even in offices and in other area of the house where a space needs to be maximized.
The major unique feature of a sofa bed is the system involved when you need to pull out the bed in times of need. Aptly called the mechanism locking bar that would allow the user to close and open, the system must be flawless in its fitting into the metal frame.
A well fit lock bar is something to be always on the look out for, if you want to shop for a sofa bed without any irritating screeching sound. Another quick tip so you?ll never go wrong when planning to shop for a sofa bed is to evaluate the frame. Apparently, the frame should be sturdy enough to withstand the weight of the users.
Saving space without losing the needed comfort ? sitting or sleeping. Indeed, you need this piece of furniture for your home. Additionally, it may very well serves as an adornment to your living room what with its contemporary designs.
The overall viewpoint why a person is buying a sofa bed is two-fold: sleeping comfort or sitting comfort. There?s nothing wrong if both could be considered. In the first place, this is really the dual functionality of a sofa bed, a two in one furniture ? sofa and a bed. They are indeed designed for daily use. It is an investment too, so you would want it to last longer with the passage of time and the tips on what to look out for when shopping should help a lot.
Before you get prepared to buy new sofa, make sure you check out author?s great free resource on sectional couches and small sectional sofa before you make the ideal decisions.

Stephen Spiker provides another statewide fundraising wrap-up, this time looking at the contested State Senate elections, which will determine if the GOP will hold all three seats of power next year.
*-Cross-posted at NoVa Common Sense. Click here for the House of Delegates Round-up. -*
Personally speaking, I?ve worked on several House of Delegate campaigns and worked as a staffer for a Delegate. I love House races because they?re so locally-oriented, but still have big-race potential, particularly in the expensive NoVa districts. However, as exciting as those races are this year, the outcome is not in doubt (Republicans will pick up a few seats, expanding their already comfortable margin) and relative to the number of seats, there aren?t as many exciting races, especially considering how few seats are actually being contested.
The real main event this November is the State Senate. We all know the details. The Democrats hold a narrow 22-18 majority, thanks to their gains in 2007 and a 2010 special election. The Republicans just need two seats to flip, since LG Bill Bolling holds the tiebreaker. In the past two sessions, so many conservative priorities have passed with huge margins and the Governor?s support, only to die in the Senate. That is what is on the line here.
As with the House, the numbers reflect the pre-primary period from July 1 to August 10, and are displayed as:
Candidate: Raised this period | Cash on Hand | # of Individual Donors
(The raised amount is taken from total receipts, which includes contributions, in-kinds, and loans. Where evident, I try to point out various anomalies like huge self-loans or party involvement.)
Because this report is for two weeks before the primary, many cash-on-hand numbers are low, as they should be. We begin in Northern Virginia, and move on from there.
Fairfax Districts:
Uncontested: None
SD 32
Janet Howell (i): $58K | $202K | 121
Patrick Forrest: $37K | $31K | 79
McDonnell Vote: 45%
Forrest continues to fundraise well, but in this district against a money juggernaut like Howell, I don?t think it?ll amount to much.
SD 34
Chap! Petersen (i): $31K | $260K | 86
Gerarda Culipher: $5K | $17K | 50
McDonnell Vote: 53%
The 34th is a winnable district against someone other than the affable, bow-tie wearing Chap!. Maybe when this seat opens up after Chap! runs statewide, we?ll see what happens here.
SD 36
Toddy Puller (i): $75K | $138K | 182
Jeff Frederick: $54K | $79K | 165
Tito Munoz: $33K | $30K | 94
McDonnell Vote: 49%
This should probably go under the PWC heading, but I live in this district, and I live in Fairfax County, so here it shall remain. Tito the Builder actually increased on his meager Q2 effort, but it still isn?t enough to come close to Frederick (who outraised even Puller last time around). Frederick is sitting on a nice pile of cash, even after spending $65K over the past six weeks, which will come in handy in the general. And recent polling that shows Frederick routing Munoz in the primary means that its a prudent decision on Frederick?s part to leave some in reserves. This is a Dem-leaning seat against an entrenched incumbent, but Frederick is well-known in Eastern PWC and if we?re able to peel this one off, taking over the State Senate is a near certainty. Full Disclosure: I?m supporting Jeff Frederick in this race.
Much, much more beneath the fold. Click here to continue reading.
SD 37
Dave Marsden (i): $41K | $55K | 131
Jason Flanary: $13K | $42K | 50
Steve Hunt: $8K | $9K | 79
McDonnell Vote: 54%
This primary has gotten regrettably nasty the past several weeks, but the reports show that both men will be behind the 8-ball money-wise against the still-illegal Dave Marsden. I?d expect to see that $42K in Flanary?s war chest get used before the 23rd; in the past six weeks Hunt has spent $14K to Flanary?s $18K, which seems low. Full Disclosure: I?m supporting Steve Hunt in this race.
SD 39
George Barker (i): $59K | $69K | 142
Miller Baker: $16K | $83K | 91
Scott Martin: $6K | $40K | 15
McDonnell Vote: 53%
Baker?s massive cash-on-hand figure comes from a $75K loan (Martin is close behind, loaning himself $63K thus far), but Baker has still managed to outspend Martin the past reporting period 3-to-1 ($45K to $15K). Full Disclosure: I?m supporting Miller Baker in this race.
Alexandria/Arlington/Falls Church Districts:
Uncontested: None
SD 30:
Adam Ebbin: $62K | $48K | 235
Elizabeth Garvey: $53K | $31K | 293
Rob Krupicka: $42K | $31K | 230
Tim McGhee: $1K | $3K | 10
McDonnell Vote: 42%
Knowing little about inside Democratic politics and less about Arlington politics, I?ll simply link to Ben?s recent endorsement/analysis: http://notlarrysabato.typepad.com/doh/2011/08/30th-senate-district-endorsement.html He calls Ebbin the underdog, though Ebbin has been raising money well. In the past six weeks, Ebbin has spent $84K, to Kupricka?s $67K and Garvey?s $112K.
SD 31:
Jaime Areizaga-Soto: $40K | $47K | 124
Barbara Favola: $60K | $35K | 137
Caren Merrick: $40K | $126K | 110
McDonnell Vote: 44%
I?m much more familiar with this race, following the drama unfold in the papers and at Blue Virginia. This has been one of the most expensive races thus far, with Soto spending over $103K and Favola putting in a whopping $164K, just in the past six weeks. Favola has been aided by $25K self-loan, while Soto has given himself thus far $215K. With Merrick?s outstanding fundraising as well (she brought in more than $150K in Q2), expect this to be one of the most expensive races in the state.
SD 35:
Dick Saslaw (i): $44K | $676K | 69
Robert Sarvis: $2K | $15K | 17
McDonnell Vote: 42%
It feels kind of odd to count this as a ?contested? race, even though nominally it is. The most consequential result of Sarvis?s bid is that now I have to include Saslaw in my list of ?Trendsetters? at the bottom.
Prince William County Districts:
Uncontested: None
SD 13:
Dick Black: $11K | $31K | 18
Bob FitzSimmonds: $4K | $25K | 29
John Stirrup: $41K | $27K | 129
Shawn Mitchell: $22K | $8K | 112
McDonnell Vote: 65%
There?s been some recent unpleasantness in this race, as well. However, unlike the 31st, whoever wins this race seems assured to win in November. Dick Black has spent $41K the past six weeks, to Fitzsimmond?s $6K and Stirrup?s $95K; clearly, the PWC Supervisor has the cash advantage. Full Disclosure: I?m supporting John Stirrup.
SD 29:
Chuck Colgan (i): $25K | $50K | 30
Tom Gordy: N/A
McDonnell Vote: 55%
Gordy is a recent addition, and hasn?t yet filed a report.
Loudoun Districts:
Uncontested: None
SD 33:
Mark Herring (i): $37K | $181K | 64
Patricia Phillips: $11K | $27K | 48
McDonnell Vote: 55%
Moving right along.
The Downstate Six To Watch:
SD 1:
John Miller (i): $52K | $137K | 218
Mickey Chohany: $115K | $127K | 131
McDonnell Vote: 54%
Mickey?s fundraising was solid, but not impressive, during Q2. That?s changed now, thanks in no small part to a $50K donation from Bob McDonnell?s PAC. However, Chohany would?ve outraised Miller even without it, and is now just $10K behind the incumbent in cash-on-hand. This is a district that Democrats won due to circumstances, and Republicans are serious about taking it back. The Democrats did their best to move the district to the left during redistricting, moving it a whopping nine points and turning into a slight lean-Dem district, so Chohany needs to keep his foot on the gas.
SD 6:
Ralph Northam (i): $65K | $257K | 66
Ben Loyola: $44K | $67K | 107
McDonnell Vote: 54%
You may remember from Loyola from the 2nd District primary (this is primarily for Nova Common Sense readers, as Bearing Drift folks don?t need any refresher). In fact, I interviewed him in the summer of 2009 and found his biography to be very compelling and his answers to be very engaging. Ben is a sharp and passionate candidate, and I?m excited to see what he can do in this race. Northam?s district has shifted about 4 points to the Dems after he won in 2007, making this district very swingy and given Northam?s fundraising, a slightly uphill battle for Loyola. But he?s raised enough to keep this race very competitive.
SD 17:
Edd Houck (i): $69K | $520K | 161
Bryce Reeves: $137K | $174K | 150
McDonnell Vote: 61%
Democrats moved Houck?s district 6 points to the left, but even then McDonnell still passed 60%. However, Houck wouldn?t be a 20+ year incumbent if he didn?t have deep roots in the region. Reeves outraised him this period with help from McDonnell?s PAC, but still lags far behind Houck?s cool half-million. Still, Houck?s winning percentage has steadily decreased since 1999, while he outspent his previous opponent by a 3-to-1 margin last go round. With a better environment, a more even financial battle, and the right candidate, this could be a real pick-up opportunity. However, Houck is still the favorite to win.
SD 20:
Roscoe Reynolds (i): $42K | $91K | 106
Bill Stanley (i): $122K | $42K | 34
Jeff Evans (i): $427 | $2K | 8
McDonnell Vote: 60%
Again, Democrats moved this strong McDonnell district 7 points to the left, for a long-term incumbent who has deep roots in the region. Reynolds has been less successful at fundraising than Houck, but he can probably expect a big cash infusion from the Dem Caucus. Bill Stanley only recently won a special election to get to the Senate, and agreed to pay his dues by running in a new district when he and Ralph Smith got put together. It remains to see how much his incumbency will help him, though $50K checks from McDonnell?s PAC certainly will. Another question mark in this district is Jeff Evans, a disgruntled Republican running as an Indie. If his fundraising is any indication, his impact will be minimal.
SD 21:
John Edwards (i): $22K | $94K | 55
Dave Nutter: $26K | $100K | 65
Tripp Godsey: $5K | $2K | 25
McDonnell Vote: 52%
This race surprised a lot of people, as Nutter is giving up a safe Delegate seat to run in a Dem-leaning district against 10+ year incumbent who previously ran statewide, and is even going up against a Tea Partier in the primary (though he seems to have the nomination in hand). Of the ?six to watch?, this is certainly the most uphill contest. But by putting so much pressure on Democrats, especially with strong candidates like Nutter, the GOP has definitely put the Democrats on the defensive, and limited the amount of money they can spend in any one district.
SD 38:
Phil Puckett (i): $107K | $213K | 215
Adam Light: $79K | $98K | 76
McDonnell Vote: 66%
One of the biggest questions going into 2011 and moving forward is the voting patterns of the Southwest. Here you have a lot of ?coal country? conservative Democrats who vote Republican for President but still can vote Democrat, especially for local candidates or exceptional politicians like Mark Warner. However, the table has been slowly turning, and some major developments have occurred just recently, including upsets like Will Morefield over Dan Bowling in 2009, and Morgan Griffith ousting Rick Boucher in 2010.
This race, in particular, has a lot of similarities to the Boucher contest. You have an older incumbent who is used to going unopposed suddenly in the fight of his life, which explains why he?s able to raise so much money. To add to the draw, Adam Light actually ran for Congress in 2010, losing to Griffith for the nomination. If the Boucher loss is the beginning of a trend, rather than a fluke, this could be one of several General Assembly seats in the region that flip.
The Rest:
SD 2:
Mamie Locke (i): $1K | $48K | 3
Thomas Harmon: N/A
McDonnell Vote: 40%
Not much to see here.
SD 3:
Tommy Norment (i): $83K | $388K | 143
Mark Frechette: $1K | $152.85 | 6
McDonnell Vote: 71%
Frechette is a Tea Partier challenging the Senate Minority Leader. One wonders if Frechette and many others intended to rock the establishment by challenging incumbent Republicans throughout the state, and all but one of them backed out. Nevertheless, I?d expect to see Norment win easily. Just a note, as this race is uncontested in the fall, Norment will not be included in the ?trendsetters? below.
SD 10:
John Watkins (i): $19K | $211K | 30
David Bernard: $7K | $5K | 23
McDonnell Vote: 59%
Given how much on the defense Democrats are, I don?t think Bernard can expect to find much support for his campaign in this lean GOP district.
SD 19:
Ralph Smith (i): $23K | $66K | 40
Brandon Bell: $0 | $0 | 0
McDonnell Vote: 69%
An interesting race to watch: Bell was defeated in the primary four years ago, and seeing no Democrat stepping up, is running as a centrist Independent hoping to forge a coalition of his Republican supporters, Independents, and Democrats to defeat Smith. He only recently got in, which explains his low fundraising. Without any party support, he has a lot of organizational hurdles to overcome. But these type of races are tough to predict, especially given how much new territory Smith has in redistricting.
SD 22:
Brian Bates: $19K | $27K | 133
Thomas Garrett: $42K | $17K | 21
Mark Peake: $27K | $32K | 100
Bryan Rhode: $33K | $36K | 139
Claudia Tucker: $20K | $25K | 68
Bert Dodson: $60K | $120K | 130
McDonnell Vote: 64%
There are a lot of dynamics in this race, and without knowing much about them I don?t want to stick my head into the lion?s mouth here. As you can see, all five GOP candidates are raising money well. Rhode tops the list of spenders in the past six weeks, putting more than $100K out there, but he?s followed closely by Garrett, with $94K. The other three lag behind in the mid-$30K range in terms of spending. However, whoever wins the nomination must work quickly to reunite the party, even in a heavy GOP district, as the Democrat Dodson is sitting on a cool $100K and outraised the field this period.
SD 25:
Creigh Deeds (i): $31 | $135K | 132
T.J. Aldous: $7K | $13K | 36
McDonnell Vote: 46%
I applaud Aldous for getting into this race.
SD 27:
Jill Vogel (i): $6K | $169K | 6
Shaun Broy: N/A
McDonnell Vote: 70%
Broy is a recent addition, but Vogel has a lot of money and access to much more, and is representing a very strong GOP district.
SD 40:
Bill Carrico: $36K | $53K | 33
John Lamie: N/A
McDonnell Vote: 75%
Delegate Bill Carrico is giving up a safe House seat to run for a safe Senate seat. John Lamie?s recent addition won?t change that.
State Overview:
Obviously the Democrats are limiting the number of battlefields by not challenging any Republicans. However, given the sheer number of targets, McDonnell?s relative popularity and fundraising prowess, and the political environment, it?s difficult to see the Democrats keeping their slim 22-to-18 majority. They would need to run the table on a number of races that they won out of sheer circumstances, as well as hope that the political shift in the Southwest doesn?t continue.
The biggest issue, however, is quantity and quality. Across the state you have strong candidates raising an impressive amount of money in seats that could easily have gone without being targeted. The 31st, 36th, and 21st districts come to mind here: Caren Merrick is a great candidate who could steal away this Arlington seat based on the vitriolic nature of the Democratic primary; Jeff Frederick is uniquely suited to run and win in the new Stafford/PWC/Fairfax district; and Dave Nutter is a surprise recruiting coup. Throw in the 37th and 39th in Fairfax, and that?s five competitive races before you even get to the most competitive five races elsewhere in the state (the rest of the ?six to watch?). With such a narrow margin, it?d be an upset at this point if the Democrats hold on.
Trendsetters:
Top Five Contested Incumbent Fundraisers: Bill Stanley ($122K), Phil Puckett ($107K), Toddy Puller ($75K), Edd Houck ($69K), Ralph Northam ($65K)

Challengers With More Cash-on-Hand Than Incumbents: Dave Nutter, Miller Baker
